MLS head gaskets require a very smooth finish on the block
If it is not a high compression I would not run that

Just to make sure of your math. Bored 40 means .040. So it would be 3.840.

I agree, use a Fel-Pro composite gasket if available. I've only seen one engine lately using a MLS that didn't leak. Leave them to race only engines making over 500hp that will be torn down frequently.

Bore size is much better. I as well as others, have developed our own methods for gasket preparation. I see this is your first build so I recommend you follow the instructions, that are with the gasket, to the letter.

Unless it is something with a lot of special pieces in it such as high comp pistons and head work why get **** about it. just buy a quality full rebuild gasket set and be done with it. The Felpro Composite gasket that comes in a complete gasket set (make sure it has it in it) will work fine and buying gaskets one at a time will break the bank in the long run.

How about 289 gaskets? If you used them you could get creative with opening things up around the valves etc.

Does For or Mr. Gasket make a .020" thick steel shim headgasket like our old Chevy V-8's have used stock for so many years? Or even like Fel-pro's #1094 .015" jobbers?

Worried about them leaking, then daub a bunch of Indianhead on everything and cinch down in like 4 or 5 pulls and then retorque at least once over a hot and cold cycle.

I'm almost **** so do it at least 3 times over as many heat cycles.
