Im working on my column and am using a f-100 column from 1956. It has a splined fit for the steering wheel, and I was curious as to how many different types of steering wheels that may fit it.
I saw some chevy steering wheels from the mid to late 50's and some 60's steering wheels at a swap meet today that sure looked like dead hits as far as spline fit goes, but wasnt sure enough to plunk down the cash to buy the wheels (another swap meet and another time if i know what would fit)
the 57 chevy and a few other odd wheels looked like dead ringgers...any one out there in HAMB land know for sure what does fit? other than the obvious ford f-100 wheels

I understand that i could also always change the steering shaft but would like to just take a shot at what would fit this one first.

    thanks
    VRF

hey thanks fiftyv8..i know its probably common knowledge in certain circles..i went searching to see what i could find on the subject, so far i havent hit anything yet.

    probably a monday question

I want to say its a common spline..but im not as certain as i needed to be to plunk down 300 bucks for a wheel if ya know what i mean?

maybe i should have asked this differently?

    maybe
GM to Ford steering wheel compatability or interchangeability..Fit?

or GM steering wheel splines that fit the 56 Ford steering shaft?

I think the ford and chevy splines are different, the shaft diameter of the F100 is bigger too. I tried putting a 54 chevy wheel on my 52 F1....no go. Chevy wheel is too small. I think maybe Ford p*** car of the same era might fit? Maybe you could borrow a wheel to test fit?

I had to cut 2 shafts up to make mine work. If you like a chevy wheel, cut the shaft and re-weld it to your ford shaft. I did, mine works great.

I don't know about Chevrolet but most any Ford product from the 50s will fit and at least Hudson's are the same. The top one is a 53 Hudson wheel that I bought to harvest the mast and I tried it on my 56 F100 shaft and it fits. The bottom wheel is a 57 Merc. accessory wheel.

    Thanks Tommy
I did see this exact reply in most all the other threads on this subject..still good info.
Im kinda partial to my chevy wheels, or GM for that matter. No offence to The blue oval. Its just how i roll.
But you never know what might come up as far as ford wheels , or ones that fit.

and its not that i dont know how to cure the problem if i need to..(cut off the offending spline and weld on the one i want) I was just hopeful that there would be a fit or a year and make of GM that would slide on with out having to take that measure.

the Merc wheel is cool..something to think about
    thanks for your input

Is there is still a Grant adapter catalog online? Best way to see what fits what. The computerized one at http://www.grantproducts.com/ just gives you a part number.

    Thanks guys.
I decided to just make my own. Took the center spline out of the wheel that came on it and adapted it to a different wheel. works great.

At the risk of getting *****ed out for reviving an old thread, what year did Ford change to the splined shaft in p***enger cars? 1949?

According to Grant - the only hubs that fit that shaft PROPERLY are 1949 to 1957 Ford F Series
