Hot August Nights will start in Long Beach CA. next year. A Lake Tahoe 3 day event was added to HAN this year.
The question is this: would many of you folks still come to the Reno Hot August Nights events?
Or, would it become just a Long Beach to Lake Tahoe event?

RENO, Nev.—A Hot August Nights official says the popular northern Nevada cl***ic car and music festival will open next year in Southern California before heading to Lake Tahoe and Reno.
Event chief Bruce Walter says the idea is to create a progressive show offering enthusiasts a chance to cruise all the way from the Pacific Ocean to the high Sierra.

But the mayors of Reno and Sparks said Thursday they fear that starting the event in August 2011 in Long Beach, Calif., may be the first step toward moving the event out of their cities.
    Walter denies that's the plan.

Hot August Nights began in Reno in 1986. Organizers say it now draws 800,000 people a year and provides a $350 million regional economic boost.
For the first time, Hot August Nights said it would open at South Lake Tahoe this summer on July 30 and remain until Aug. 1. The festival will then move to Reno and Sparks until Aug. 8.
In 2011, Hot August Nights will run from Aug. 3 through 14, opening in Long Beach then moving to South Tahoe and on to Reno.

I get what they are trying to do... expand it, make it something that more people in more areas will see, involve a driving aspect to the show... and SOME will participate in the moving aspect of it... but in the end what will happen is that it will water down the main show. Some will go to the Tahoe part and not Reno. Some will go to the Long Beach part and not Reno. So the whole thing will seem a little less instead of it building it up into a multi location event.

A moving show will be hard to do. Part of the appeal of HAN is that its a destination... Reno. You get there, you've got a car show that lasts for MANY days, takes MANY days to see... and its got its own things going on that make it a destination.

HAN has already stepped on their ****s by screwing up the Reno Swap Meet, I dont see this as a good move either.

    just my take on it.

i finally made it in 2007. turns out the swap was already on it's way downhill. lots of repop chinese new stuff and cheapo tool vendors. it's always nice to be able to buy/sell enough to help pay for the trip. i did have a great time looking at the wide variety of cars. walked a million miles! still, for me, it was a "BUCKET LIST" deal. next is bonneville.

  5. They do an event like that here. You are right. Horrible for the bodies that want to go and look at cars (paying gate). I heard some locals in the watering hole last week complaining/laughing about the stops since the run/show was set up by non locals.

At least the gangsters will not have far to go if it starts in Long Beach, then they can ruin the show in several citys instead of just Reno. I went in 07 and it was pretty fun till the donks rolled into town and then it went down hill fast. I will probably never go again, I am with lil.timmy , a bucket list thing. next stop salt!

to be fair... it looks like the Reno part of the show will be the same... they are just adding more locations BEFORE the show gets to Reno.

It may catch on at the other locations... but I dont know how many will participate in the entire thing... thats 2 weeks of car show... thats alot.

Seems like the Tahoe part of it could water down the Reno part. Tahoe is prettier, but Reno is "bigger". Some may choose one or the other and it may make both a little smaller.

    Dunno.

I do agree, HAN is something to see... once. I used to go for the swap meet and didnt pay much attention to the car show.

Now the Reno Swap Meet is in Sacramento, so i have no need to go to Reno.

Now that I live up here and its a lot closer, Bonneville is going to be one of my next big deals. Can't get enough of land speed racing, I sure miss El Mirage, which used to be less than an hour away when I lived down south.

HAN is too big now. you need to focus on a couple of areas while there. lots of people never go into Reno to experience this event. not really HAMB friendly. the real swap meet people go to Sacramento now. I do not get the idea of a "moving" car show, unless you are doing some type of planned caravan.
as an example, the Goodguys have shows all over the country. people that have been to one of their shows like or dislike 'em. but, when you say "Goodguys" you pretty much know what to expect. so, if whoever is running HAN wants to have seperate car shows fine. but, do not try to make it seem that a show in SoCal is part of a show in Reno.

we've been to HAN a couple times and we dont really participate in the events. we just go to see the town full of cars and do our own thing. we catch the parade at the end though, thats always cool

We quit going in 01. Too many problems with idiots hanging out being stupid. I always had fun there when everyone was being cool though. JOKER JASON.

Pretty interesting to hear what others have to say about HAN. I agree, the event is almost too big. After being on the waiting list for several years, I finally got a letter recently, for registration for next years show. I was really excited until I read that the fee was $170.00 for one years registration! Holy ****! for that kind of money I can pay for gas to go to Bonneville or California to see some COOL shows. I'll just cruise HAN this year and park for free right outside. Why pay for registering, its not like my car would win any of that BIG money they give out here to rich dudes that don't need it anyways.

There are no "paying gates" for spectators at any of the Reno/Sparks HAN car shows.
Only the car show entrants have to pay.
    Something wrong with that!

I will be making the trip to Reno this year from Canada, along with some buddies and thier rides. Maybe not a HAMB friendly event, but some of my cars aren't either. Its on my list of things to do and look forward to the entire event. Hopefully the addition of Tahoe and Long Beach wont wreck it, but....
    Bonneville next year!

  17. That is why there are problems:rolleyes: From what I have read the last few years it is far from a family freindly event these days.

I have been going to this event for the last five years and it is very family friendly. The city is firmly in control, and there has been no repeat of the problems that occurred in 1998.
It is a fun weeklong event, and it would be impossible to have a "paying gate" since it is spread out all over two cities with a mul***ude of car shows.
I just think to charge entrants $170.00 to enter a car is just over the top.

So this is a progressive show, they aren't moving the show?

I received a press release last week about the show that read totally different, I thought they were moving the show to Long Beach in 2011.

This is sounding like a PR nightmare....

I have been the past 4 years and never had a problem - would happily take my kids to HAN and have always felt safe at the car shows. There are car shows at the various casino's - so there is plenty to choose from - and it is free for the public - so how can you complain in this economy?

Sure, Downtown Reno is like any big city at night and it pays to be sensible. But I've enjoyed the event every year - it isn't a HAMB type event, but there is more to Hot Rodding than that. Like any event you get out of it what you want too...

That's definitely not the release I read. The one I read was more industry oriented and I think it was released by the city of Long Beach.

I'll see if I can hunt it up, I think I deleted it already though. Oh well, doesn't really matter to me, not my PR crisis this time :D

  26. I was pointing out a similar situation here to choptop, not complaining. And from the threads I have read over the years I have not been that impressed with HAMBer reports, glad to hear it has been cleaned up. You folks have fun in Reno:)

I agree. I take a HAMB friendly car every year. Talking to people at the show you find that even some of the gold chainers actually get it.
From what Ive seen, the gang banger element has dropped off a lot since early 2000.
