This may be the dumb question of the day, but I've been searching the last two days and I think I've got my A box figured out. I just needed to run it by you all. I'm putting an A steering box in my 1920 T Roadster (click for thread) and it'd work best if we could mount the box with the pitman arm pointing up. Set up that way, the steering action would be reversed. I "had" found an article somewhere on the internet (maybe even here), which I didn't save and cannot find, that mentions using the innards of a RHD model a box. That sounds like it'd work for me. Now, what I'm thinking is ordering a worm gear and sector shaft from Snyder's or Mac's as well as related bushings and such. Two things I've been wondering: 1) Should I get a new sector shaft to mate with the new worm gear? and 2) Has anyone known to be any other differences between the boxes, other than the obvious fact that one is for the right and the other the left? I'm referring more to the question of will my steering box notice any difference in the parts or would the parts interchange? Any help here will be appreciated. THANKS!
Another question... does anyone know if the RHD and LHD sector shafts are the same? I can't see any difference.
Well, I have never had a Model A box open, but I have worked on some F-1's. I would guess the A box RHD stuff should fit into the LHD box and do what you want it to. And I would think the sector shafts are different (teeth slant the other way). Can you order the RHD sector and worm gear to compare side-by-side with your LHD? Then send them back if they don't look like they will work? You'd only be out some shipping costs, right?
You're right. That's the only way I think I'll get the answers I'm looking for. Eric, I'm interested. What's needed to reverse it or is it already reversed? I sent you a PM... thanks!
