Does obnoxiously loud and noisy mean anything to you ? I don't care to run around sounding like an open piped harley or an old farm tractor.

Go buy porters right now! you wont be sorry!

  5. Ran a parts store cherry-bomb on one of my beaters for a long time. Much quieter than nothing, it could be loud if you stood on it but otherwise it was fine. Biggest problem I had was going from 3" pipe to 2 1/2" to make it work, I had to make my own turndown.

I ran that truck a couple times with nothing, when the old exhaust fell apart or my half-***ed on the road fixes broke again, and the drone at highway speeds would drive you crazy, no way I would want a car I'm going to drive a lot to not have something on it.

I like the Porter's and they're sounding better everytime I fire the flathead up.

I run cherry bombs on my '62 through bellflowers. I love the sound. I chose them because they are 'perforated' rather than louvered. It gives me that old school "rap" I was looking for. Purple Hornies also sound great IMO. They are louvered mufflers...gives you that 'muscle' rumble.

That is true, however if the police stop you here and set their sound meter a measured distance behind your pipes and take a Db reading you might be glad to have them.

If the idle db sound reading is above 92 db and then 96 db at 2000 rpm then you get a $250 ticket and possibly a vehicle repair order :(

This is what they are currently doing to motorcycles, and cars are sure to be next.

Could pay for them quite quickly.

I run two 26 inch long 2.5 inch pipe powersticks on my truck and they sound great. They're a little too louder for a daily so I am thinking about adding resonators to them to quiet them down. Besides the loudness the tone is perfect, it sound great at idle, when driving, and when I step on it.

I had a pair of these on my truck. I loved the way they sounded, but they got to be too loud for long trips. It wasn't too bad a first, but then we installed AFR heads and raised my compression, and swapped my C6 for an AOD. With more compression and the AOD dropping revs it just started to drone real bad inside the cab.

I ended up switching to to some 5x9 oval magnaflows. I really like them, its quiet in the cab when cursing down the road, but still gets loud when I get on it.

But I did hang on to my chambered mufflers, I have them in mind for another project that won't see too many highway miles.

Welllll.... two of those switchable mufflers would cost close to $750, so it'd take three muffler tickets to even out the cost. Since you can put on a pair of nice sounding (but quieter) conventional gl***- or steelpacks for $100 or so, the switchable ones seem prety extravagant to me.

I have dual 36" Thrush Gl***packs on my '63 Dodge Power Wagon with a 318 and I think they're pretty mellow unless you're really winding it out. I had a single shorter Cherry Bomb on it when it had a /6 and it would pop and crackle like crazy and was embarr***ing.

The Thrushs are perforated and the Cherry Bombs are louvered so I went with the Thrush since it seemed like they would have better flow.

speaking about something I've done for a living since 1977, a gl*** pack muffler has a timeless sound. The longer the quieter, and an H added helps hold down the cackle. Most have a two inch core , this also quietens them down some. I can get and use a two and a half core in the eighteen inch length on a lot of old hot rods. They sound off , when used in front of a two inch tail pipe they are down right loud. The longer the tail pipe the louder they are. A good sound is a two and a half core /eighteen incher with an H and three inch tailpipes. Deep sound and when you get into it they sound get loud. Old school Smitty's and Porter are the top end of the gl*** packs. Better quality but pricey

Well I ended up going with 12" gl*** paks, sound great. When you get after it, it lets you know it's a Rod. I guess the old saying " if you can't hear it coming there is no reason to look". Thanks guys for your opinions Built Ford Tough with Chevy Stuff.

with stock manifold gl***packs have a cool cl***ic sound.
If you dont make power ( ie SBC ) stuff it up with some slowmasters to make noise.
I run ******s, maxflow on 442 and car runs better than with the slowmasters, but a great soundig muffler was the ****** aerochamber , melow with slight rumble at idle and opened up nicely under throttle ,

I've run lots of different kinds on lots of different vehicles.

Hate: Single 40 flowmaster on my suburban with 454. Its so damn loud and resonant at idle that it makes my eardrums tingle and itch. I can still somehow hear the pinion gear whine over it, dammit. Also hate the Magnaflows on my 455 pontiac powered stude. Sonofa***** sounds like a farmall tractor.

Love: ****** Aerochambers on anything with duals, and my old 80s cutl*** with 350, 2.5" single exhaust, and a gl***pack. It had a nice mellow sound.

I am partial to a new startup company called FloJo, course the brain behind them has been a friend of mine for a long time so I may be a bit biased.

The Camaro I had is running his system with the x pipe, etc. Sounded very good.

I have 26" cherry bombs on a mild 327 with ram horn manifolds. The sound is just OK. I like the volume, but the tone seems higher pitched than I'd like, but it's not bad enough for me to change them.

I've heard that steel packed over gl*** has a deeper tone.

I had Flowmaster Hushpower 2's..... they had a nice tone, but way too quiet for my mild street motor.

  29. Getting a ticket for excessive noise, here in the Daytona Beach are is pretty rare. You see we have very loud Scooter Trash, all year long.

I wish they still made the old all metal Thrush mufflers. Loved em. A sound all their own.
