GM brake noise?

I did a disc conversion using GM calipers on my 56 Ford F100. The bearings are new, rotor, pads and calipers have about 5K miles on them. When I roll slowly and turn the wheels to make a left turn, I get a rubbing or grinding sound similar to a tire rubbing on the inner fender. Nothing is rubbing. I pushed on the brake pedal when it made the noise and got a stiff pedal and noise got louder. If I driver faster, the noise goes away. I'm running a corvette MC and have disc on the rear using Cadillac calipers (I know they are a pain!) Any suggestions on what to look for?

  2. I usualy forget to grease the slider pins good and have to take it apart at least one more time.

  3. Take it apart and look for shiny spots where something was contacting.

Did you use the disc brake pad spray on the back of the pads? I always use brake lube on the pins, bushings and where the caliper slides on the bracket.

Another trick is to make sure the "ears" on the outboard pad are bent down around the caliper, it keeps the pad from rocking around and making noise.

Of course you used a new spring clip on the inner pad. Any brake job I dive into gets a new hardware kit.

I'm going to pull the calipers off today and see what I have or can see. I appreciate the advice, I'll let you know what I find.

Do you have a residual valve in line? it should be 2# not the 7or10. But on Vette M/C I don't think you need any for disc brakes. Good Luck! N.N.

I don't have residual valves in the line and was told that I don't need them because the MC is mounted on the firewall and not on the frame. The brakes worked fine before. I thought about the residual valves myself... Good point! It looks like the front driver's side brake is creating the noise and only when making a turn to the left, but it's hard to say.

Well, we took the brake calipers off and I notice the pins where barely lubricated. I also noticed the bushing that slide on the pins were frozen to the pins and has some scaring on the bushings. Went and got new bushings, check the seals, put plenty high temp brake grease on the pin and bushing and put it together. Everything else looks great. Haven't test drove it, but will later tonight. My guess is this could be the problem! Thanks for the advice all.
