Hey all, I have been doing alot of research on this website and came with alot of useful knowledge.. I recently picked up a 1950 Plymouth, this is my fist car thats older than me I have ever owned.. I did some research on converting to alternator from generator and decided to take on the project since my generator wasnt charging and the mounting tabs were broken and was basically rigged up to keep the belt moving (how i bought it) anyways i converted to alternator and fab'ed a bracket, went back and reinforced the bracket so there is no wobble in it.. Now thinking that everything was fine, started the car watched the belt seemed like it liked its new home going around the alternator, so I closed the hood and decided to take her for a spin around the neighborhood and see if the battery would start charging.. Well my luck it threw the belt (guessing when i gave it a lil gas) and got hot enough to blow out a freeze plug, (awesome,, at least I was in the neighborhood) anyways I get it home, and put one of those rubber freeze plugs from autozone as a temp fix while I fill the cooling system with a vinegar/water mix to flush the system, ( I ordered new freeze plugs this is just so I could continue working on the car) ... pop the belt back on tighten her all down, start her runnin good, but i noticed the crank pulley is wobbling like its either going to fall off or is way out of balance? well to humor myself before I take off in it again I hit the throttle at the carb and off came the belt right away.. Sorry for this long post just trying to explain the situation,.. So here is my question.. does anyone know what I can do to maybe fix this or is it mean I have a to get a new crank??,balancer? i dont know and im really confused and still waiting on the service manual I ordered to come in.. The car is also making a sound that I was told is just the lifters and could be adjusted and fixed no problem, check it out for yourself tell me what your opinion on it is? I searched but came up short on anyone else dealing with this.. if someone can point me in the right direction or maybe give some advice to what im dealing with would be very helpful, thanks here is a video, I was trying to get a shot of the crank pulley wobble but you can hear the ticking sound for sure, thanks guys sorry I really didnt want to post on here with **** if its not needed, but hopefully you all can help me out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmSrcxuAbfQ
I did not watch the video, need to upgrade my flash player to do that and my daughter just installed firefox for old dad's benefit, so I will make an ***umption from the text of your post. If the pulley on the crankshaft is wobbling it must be loose. If you are lucky the pulley bolts to the vibration dampner and tightening that will fix it, If the dampner is loose on the crankshaft and has been moving around for awhile then you may not be able to tighten it up, especially if the key or keyway has worn. But try to tighten it first, you might get lucky. Could be the extra belt load of the alternator loosened it up. If all goes well and you get the wobble out of the crank pulley you should use some sort of straight edge to make sure the alternator is in alignment with the crank pulley. Good Luck. B
I think the pulley will be the least of your problems. First, take the crank pulley off and check to see if it is bent or maybe just loose. You should be able to straighten it if it not too bad. Pull the spark plugs and run a compression test on the engine and verify all cylinders are close to the same reading. The clicking sounds like valve noise to me. Those engines were solid lifters and are not easy to get right. Read the manual when it arrives and do some diagnostics before you tear it apart. Keep the faith, it gets easier after awhile.
I was fooling around with the car some more, I tried to reach down there to feel if I felt anything loose on the crank pulley, it seemed like there was only one big nut holding everything on down there, ( i may be mistaken but its hard to get my hands down there) thanks for the help I guess a compression test and pulling out the rad and support to get to that pulley is next on the list, thanks for the help... Edit: on another note while transporting the car home (3hr drive) is when i noticed the tabs were broken off the generator, the guy did a shoddy fix with some flatwashers that didnt work and that caused it to throw the belt the first time,, no harm done, I picked up a s**** of tire tread from a semi and wedged it between the motor block and the generator to create tension, and it drove fine the rest of the way home, (picture in avatar .. haha) I have not really driven this car for sake of trying to get it road worthy since, and it makes perfect sense that having the tension from the new alt could of forced something loose (at least it makes sennse in my head..) but i will really have to get into it to figure out if thats what is wrong..
well im no genius but i think this has to do with the problem.. dont know how it got like this and dont know when it happened but ill start with a new one of these and see how good the belts stay on.. and...
You could try this guy: http://www.damperdoctor.com/ He may also be able to revive your existing one.
Ha .... I love it! You may not have any experience with old cars, but you've damn sure got the right at***ude! Methinks you'll do well. Good luck.
turns out a new pulley fixed the problemo, thanks to John (plym49) for the spare pulley he had, i havent been on here long but already the HAMB has been soo very helpful...
