I have been eyeballing this 59 Ford Fairlane 2 door for a couple of weeks only one block from my office in town. It was sitting in the yard of an old lumber yard property and no one was ever around. So 2 days ago I drove by and the owner was there. I stopped and said, "I sure do like that 59 ford you have there" and he said "you want to buy it?" and I said "yes." So, he unlocks the gate and I go in for a closer look. Wow----it is a retractable hardtop Skyliner convertible. Pretty rough fixer upper but it has potential. Picked it up tonight after work and will get it running and stopping first and then see about the retractable top mechanism. Never owned one before and know nothing about them. I feel lucky to own it. <center>

I had thought it was a regular 2 door coupe not a retractable convertible. It came with the optional stainless steel fender skirts too.<center>

Then we walked around his property and I was able to buy a real good solid 26 Ford Model T roadster. More on that one tomorrow when I pick it up.

That would be a great candidate to try some CLR on it. WOW what a great find! Love those cars. Working right, its an electro-mechanical work of art.

Can you spot the T roadster body and restored ch***is in this photo? Can you imagine I have worked at my office for almost 5 years now and these cars were only one block away and I didn't know it? <center>

You and I have WAY different opinions about what a "rough fixer upper" is, that one looks clean. Good score. I'm parting out a plain '59 right now, let me know if you need anything.

Great score; don't the the complexities of the retractable hardtop scare you. Once you've sorted the system out it can be made to be reasonably reliable.

Nice find--can't believe you actually found one of those guys who was willing to part with vintage tin. I seem to be a magnet for the "yeah you can look at it but it aint for sale--I'm 82 and going to restore it". I found a couple of cherry 57 bel-air hardtops in a metal shed-stored since 1962-and the old ******* said he would never sell them. Good luck and keep that patina!

that car looks like it has lots of potential and will clean up nice.

I think it is a bit fancy for the poverty-stricken fella from Gypsum, KS.

  11. Just make sure your not in the "trunk" when you put the top down. I witnessed a guy get stuck in the trunk of a retractable top Lincoln once. It wasn't working right, and the guy climbed in to see what happened when it went down, took a couple of hours, and some strong guys pulling, to get the top back up. Guy about died in there, it was getting close to cutting a hole in the thing to get him out. I think beer was involved. Dean

  12. Paul, a hundred people would step over a dog poo on the sidewalk and then you'd go kick it over and it'd turn out to be a gold nugget.

Beautiful 59 , Lower it a little to get the stance right and get some nice blackwalls [fat] and keep those hubcaps. Great car. How is the inside?

I know! A plain man from the Plains like me don't deserve anything like this. Still don't know how I got it bought.

That 59 looks pretty damn good to me. Good color too, could 2 tone it red/white/ even gold if you wanted to go that direction. I imagin 352 and Cruiseomatic combo being that heavy of a car.

No, No.... The '70's Galaxie hubcaps gotta go. Just put some '59 Dog dishes on there and cut 2 rounds off the front springs and you are good. Can't go wrong with an all black retractable. Right? When's the last time you saw one Hot rodded? Never!

Oh yeah, I'll take the 66 sign and you can keep the T model. Deal?

Good job depleting the locals of old iron!

before you run the top if you can get to the actuaters they are electric screw motors with plastic covers you can remove the plastic covers and clean the screw part and regrease them. the old grease will turn hard and not let the screw work I have fixed alot of them and after this they work well. That is what people didn't like about these cars they thought it was all hydraulic. Nice ride good luck RED

I'll look around a bit....... not long ago I stumbled across a web site/page all about the restoration of the mechanism on the retractables. No promises though!

don't ever mention BATMAN around Povertyflats. You will hear a very long story and will also learn about his desire to wreck good cars to make a Batmobile. PLEASE, do not mention BATMAN. Besides, I am homophobic.

Don't be surprised if he puts some Cragars on that old Ford. Seriously.
