A year? If it got in it has to go out. A baffle creating a dam maybe? Turn it, wait , turn it and wait. repeat until you figure out the path.
Two gallons mixed with a fill-up should do it , if there isn't water in the tank. Another way to get one to air out quicker is to put an air line in it with a small amount of pressure to help it evaporate.
It won't evaporate completely.What you will have left is a thick sticky moll***es like ****. It will get as thick as tar and eventually turn hard as epoxy.If you are going to ever use the tank, you need to drain it out somehow if its old.
The **** thats left isnt evaporating because its not gas, its sludge. I wouldnt want to leave an open tank left to evaproate for safety reason.
Be sure to take a peek in there and make sure there is no coating of crud about to flake off - that cna happen with OLD gas tanks - ask me how I know...
