Projects It's a slippery slope, I just bought an enclosed trailer...

Arrgghhh. I sort of cringe at the thought, but a buddy of mine offered me an enclosed car trailer, bargain priced, and I'm gonna buy it. I've borrowed an open trailer from another friend several times in the past year, and I wince at asking, even tho he's generous and doesn't mind. I'll feel better having my own equipment.

I can also park something in it over the off season, and free up some garage/shop space, at less cost than I could build a building or shed to house a car. This will be a plus as well.

I also thought about adding some interior wiring and lights, a roof top A/C, and fold down bunks, so we could double as a "camper" if we travel somewhere with an uncomfortable, hot, noisy, slightly unreliable car. Like the '36.

Now, where'd I put those gold chains and Jordache jeans from the 70's?...

I am doing exactly what you are thinking.. SOON..

I did a deal with foghorn62 and got a enclosed 20 footer (with a car inside) last fall.. I plan to add bunks and a dorm rug from one of the big box stores so that I can camp in it at the drags / carshows whereever..

I just need a better tow vehicle as my 1/2 ton just isnt up to the job..

and for what its worth.. I already stored a car (and a ton of parts in mine during last winters storms.. it saved me several hundred dollars in storage fees..

    I say go for it..

  6. Plus all that storage comes without the added property taxes that another bay on the garage will garner! Did I mention I hate property taxes?

We equipped our smaller swap meet trailer many years ago with fold-down beds and good lighting, no A/C though. Came in very handy for those meets which didn't justify the motorhome and 26 ft. trailer.

  8. I got my enclosed trailer to have a rolling shed/storage as well. You won't be sorry that you did.

I really like having mine. I only use it to or 3 times a year. It usually is the kids play room, my boy has his lil craftsman stuff out there and they skateboard in it. Right now its got the 53 in it so its out of my way... You'll find many uses for it.

I wouldnt' "cringe" at all. I'd love to be able to afford one for my junk. I rent 2 storage garages to store swap meet stuff and need room badly. An enclosed trailer would fit the bill just fine..if I had room to park it.

I love to have a trailer, but living in an urban area, there's no place to park it. My friend has a trailer and he is only too happy to loan it out, but he wants you to keep it until he needs it because he has no place to park it. (LOL)

  12. I can't believe it took you so long to aquire one Brian. Cheepest storage unit on the planet. It helps to pull a wheel to keep the steelers from grabing it.

I must confess I am shopping for a 28' enclosed trailer so I don't have to build more garage space. My wife even agreed the economics make sense for now!

I'm glad I have mine altough I think I've moved about as many houses and shops with it then cars! Think it's bad when you have a friend moving and they know you have a truck...
Overall, it's just plain handy to have around and I'm glad I popped for the enclosed instead of an open. When I bought my 40 out of town that was dissasembled I could sleep well that night at a motel, didn't have to worry about loose parts walking off in the night nor falling off the next day on the way home. Great for the same reason for swap meets.
You don't need those gold chains till you start hauling your billit street rod to the runs!

And don't forget anti-theft devices, and maybe paint the license plate number on the roof.

No speed parts stickers or any of that, either!

You might want to distinguish it from all the other white boxy car haulers though, with a wide stripe along the top or bottom, along with your name on the sides in letters maybe 4" high. Also, have the last eight characters of the trailers' VIN on both sides and the rear, like a semi truck does on the sleeper. Anything to make it stand out just enough from all the rest of them on the highway.

Far as the roof goes, your tag number AND the trailer VIN in reflective characters at least two feet high is great insurance

  28. Enclosed trailers are great to have, couple of things #1-put the state and plate number on the roof!!!!!!!!,#2- you now own a extra garage stall,#3-do you self a favor and upgrade to LED lighting on the trailer(less draw)#4- when some one ask "why you using a trailer" tell them-Because I can afford the damn trailer!.....

LOL, mean like this one? Actually, we have this and the '51 Pontiac wagon, each very capable of tow duty, but I'm building the Diamond T pickup for just this sort of thing. One ton, bigger brakes, engine, heavier, a little more suited to towing.

Thanks for the positive comments, I did feel a little guilty about having a CAR trailer, although we will be pulling it with a suitable car or truck. Like the plate # and state of origin on the roof.

I did think about painting it silver and putting Spartan decals on it too!

  30. This thread takes me way back to the 70,s when the first street rod nationals were held in Australia .I had a fully enclosed trailer for my drag car and so I converted with a stand up ice chest and beds to stay in with the wife at the nats. Well the trailer was not lined and I have never been so ****ing cold sleeping in a big tin box ,it dropped way below zero on the first night but someone loaned us an electric heater for the rest of the time so we were sweet.
