You guys have always had alot of good information in the past and I'm hoping you all can help again. I'm trying to get any info I can on Westside Auto Salvage in Westside, IA. My Dad bought a hi-po 289 out of there in the sixties and I'm hoping we may be able to scrounge up so information about the car it came out of. I'm wondering if anybody knows if it's still the same family that owns it? Did they keep much for records? If there may be anyone around there that has any info that far back? Are they even still open? Whatever help you guys can give would be great. The reason I am asking questions is this: This is a factory hi-po 289(cast iron headers, etc.) It(along with a T10) was pulled from a 1963 Falcon Sprint in 1966. This is where it gets curious. According to all the records I have seen thus far, the hi-po 289 didn't happen until '64 or '65(depending on who you believe). Another thing that is odd is that the engine, as pulled, had the big hog of a carb like Shelby used in his Mustangs instead of the little dinky 480 cfm. I'm just wondering how this combo happened when it was that new? When I get the engine dug out, at least I'll have some numbers to do further research with. Thanks all. Justin
63 FALCON SPRINT had a 260 cu. in. probably blew the motor up and replaced it with the hi po 289...happened all the time back then
My Mom had a 64 wagon with a 351 in it, bout 75. Crazy assed woman would walk on a carlot looking for a grocery getter and unknowingly by the fastes car on the lot. did the same thing to a 68 Plymouth Sports Fury with a 70 or so police interceprter hemi but then she drove 95 when the speed limit was 75 (back in 1975).
That would seem to be the most likely situation. I just thought it was weird that a 3 year old car would have had a transplant of a practically new engine like that. Lord knows nobody with a normal income could afford to do that now.
Westside Auto Salvage is on Hwy. 30 West of Cedar Rapids. I don't think there is a Westside Iowa. Westside is still open. I have talked to them but don't recall doing any business with them. They still have some HAMB friendly cars for salvage by the way. Luck with records. John
I'd say pull the engine out and run the numbers before trying to contact anyone and see what turns up, I tend to agree it was a replacement motor. Maybe somebody knew somebody to get that slipped in. It would seem apparent the car wasn't well cared for if they blew up one motor and then wrecked it or whatever so it ended up in the junkyard at three years old.
I've had a lot of conflicting info from websites when I have decoded Chevy and Pontiac stuff in the past. What is a reliable site to get the info on Ford products?
Westside iowa is just west of carroll iowa, and does have a small salvage yard been thereat least 40 years. also on hwy 30.
