Have you beat nicer cars at a show?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by R Frederick, Jun 14, 2010.

  1. A few weeks back...

2nd time out with the car. Exterior still missing a few stainless pieces. Interior not complete (missing door handles, garnish molding etc...) and just thrown in the car.

Took best custom as the Sins Of Steel Show near Detroit.

I about ****!!! I was thankful just to get it on the road enough to be there and never expected nothing.

Apparently, the car struck a chord with the judges.

That trophy (sculpture Really) will mean more to me than 100 cheesy car show tropies. Why, because a group of hard-core traditional car guys "got it". They saw where I was going with the car and showed there appreciation.

    Great day!!

I took my '49 Ford coupe to Paso in 2002. We were a little late so our club didnt get one of our usual spots around the perimiter of the park. We ended up at the center of the park, right by the Gazebo.
Later that afternoon I went to the car for something and there was an award notification on the floor. Sunday I found I had won Top Mild Custom...at Paso!!... and there were a lot of much nicer cars there!!
The Gazebo was the place where you dropped off your voting slips, and I figure there were a lot of people heading in to cast their votes that realized they needed a last minute mild custom for their ballot, and there was my car!!!

About 20 years ago- there was a local show in the park. It was rain or shine. It was a top ten show, no best of & no cl*** awards. It was a ****ty misty day.
11 cars showed up. There were 10 awards. We all sat in a group praying we wouldn't be the single car that was the looser that day. None of them were into trophys- except that day. Funny ****.

Bobbin head rod run last year there was alot of non-hamb friendly cars, quite a few that would make you vomit. However there were alot of nice cars also. A guy rocks up in his blown gl*** 32 roadster with gear drive, billet and alloys making plenty of noise, duvall screen. Gets out wiping the car clean and all.

Meanwhile best of show went to fellow hamber celticskull and his satin blacked tudor. Nice car that me and dad really liked.

Missed the presentation but a few people told me the look on the roadster guys face was priceless.

I get a lot of comments from the sign I put on my car at the car show. Get lots of dirty looks from the gold chainers too. If a kid comes up and wants to look in it I open the door and tell him to climb in.

Trophies are only a couple pcs of fake wood, some plastic and a doohicky on top.
More fun to drive somewhere with your bros grab a couple drinks, maybe food and a good bull-**** session climb back in and do it again now thats fun.

I'm in the process of collecting old trophies that other people no longer want. I plan to dismantle them and then rebuild them into a three tiered, (six foot or taller) single trophy. After I'm done with the rebuild I'll use my engraver to inscribe "Best of Everything" on the front of it, and then drag it around with me wherever I go in my 27 T RPU. I'll keep you guys posted on whatever happens next!

Of course; Every winner does. Never was a horse that couldn’t be rode, never was a cowpoke that couldn’t be throwed.

It's a **** shoot. Have a blind show with two (or twenty) judging teams, with no communication between them, and you'll have two (or twenty) different winners.

It's evident every time I win an award, embarr***ing to walk up there knowing that the judges missed somebody else's car, picked mine over MANY others that could have been picked instead. But, have I ever refused to accept????
Hell no. I appreciate the recognition, it's rewarding to know somebody noticed.

On the other hand, should I ever question the decision when the opposite (it obviously happens most of the time) when others win? Jeezzzzzzzz, what a pompous *** I would be.................

Went with my gf's father to a show with his 46 Lincoln Continental Convertable and his 60 Lincoln mark 3(?) convertable. He took 2nd in
his cl*** with the 46- said it was the first time he ever won a trophy.
I did not have the heart to tell him there was no third place car, but I
did hear a lot of angry guys in other cl***es over the results. Jim

I once went to a car show where there was this mini truck. It was rather crude, and I snickered when I first looked at it. Then I got to talking with the kid who had built it. I quickly realized that he was physically and mentally challenged, and that he had given that truck all he was capable of. Super nice kid, too. He ended up getting my people's choice vote. You just never know...

Not my car, but a friend's. He picked up some awards in indoor car shows with his '33 Ford flatbed (pickup). The truck was a quicky build after he wrecked his real show car. It had great paint, flamed fenders, nice wheels, clean (but used) 283, pinstriped, a good looking interior (recycled from the wrecked car)....and an undercarriage coated with 2" / 40 years of oil, grease and mud (a real driver...). I know you could eat off of the undercarriage of some of the cars he "beat"....

Haha great story. I actually would have paid to see that. We don't get too many trophy *****s around here. Or maybe I just don't pay attention. "Show cars" don't do anything for me. They have no history or soul. I prefer the cars that look like you can take them out around town and/or in the mud. Hence me owning a truck:D

For me a car show is a social event. Without the people, the interaction, the awards, etc, NOBODY would go.

To skoff and say 'I don't care' is off the mark. Actually, I believe you care, but for some unknown reason think it's unseamly to admit it. That's sad.

"It's not who wins, it's how we play the game". There is a true meaning of that old saw; A lot of self-centered, people in this world will never get it.

To the people that get wrapped around the axle about what car won and what car didn't win, lighten up. Your spokes are wound too tight.

To the people that can't quite admit it out loud that they need some of the attention too, that's sad. I suggest you re-evaluate your outlook on life in general, not just how you percieve car shows. You're missing something, , , ,

Well said, I like to go to socialize and share my car with children that seem to glow looking at these cars.
If I'm not mistaken, the LA Roadster Show is a car show too.
It is all about how you look at it.

i like most poeple build what i like and what i want and do it the way i feel looks best for the amount of cash i have to spend but i would be lying if i said i dident care what other people thought

One of the few times I actually stayed at a car show till the end, the host said that the last few weeks, I won a trophy but I was always gone, so they didn't judge my car that day. I told them GOOD, give it to someone that cares.

  27. VERY WELL said, the main reason I go to any show is to hang out with my friends, meet new ones, and look at other cars well enjoying a beer or two..... oh, I usually leave my hood open, seeing as I don't have one.

I can care less about trophys as they are just dust collectors but I got one with my 37 Chevy p/u at this one show/swapmeet,I only parked in the show area since it was real close to the swapmeet but as I was sitting in the truck waiting for a friend to show up they called out my name. There were a few nicer trucks then mine but someone liked my 37 and yes the trophy is in the garage collecting dust.

I have a bunch of big old trophies for a Mustang I had 25 years ago, you guys would call it Pro Street, I called it Super Comp or Super Gas, but the show judges know better than me, so what the hell, I took a best of show out of about 300 cars at this one show, ?, Got a nice trophy for purty, Got a nicer trophy for burnout..... shhhh.. I had roll control, Did another show and put it on the course, you know that slalom thing, I just tried it and lost it so I sat there and spun her around about 200 times in a circle, I think the EPA came out on that one, got a trophy for that. I like the trophies for the burnout and the circles, you can have the others. I entered the street machine nats in '87, had a great time street racing by the place we were camping, Scott Sullivan took a look at my car and thought it was cool, I still had half the street stuck to my rear quarter from enjoying the car, I was happy, he was known, cool, 15 minutes later Boyd is wandering by with his entourage and pauses and announces publicly that my car is a piece of ****, he pointed out that it was obvious that I took no pride in it because it was filthy and had **** all over the back quarter, I told him nice shirt and he told be to "F' off, I left the rubber on the rear quarter for the rest of the show. On Saturday one of the smaller Magazines came along and asked if I would pose the car for them, they said they would detail it and they did a real nice job, just before the shoot we tossed out a little moose juice and lit the fires of hell to the 13.5 x 31 eagles, that detailed the back just as I liked it, so the guy gets all pissed off and starts yellin at me and my buds, he says clean that **** off there or no shoot, I says, this is a go car not a show car, I built this to drive not pose, show it with its war paint on or dont bother, they picked up their gear and left, That was the best feeling I ever had, I build working girls not prom princesses.

hands down...THAT is the correct stance for 49-51 Tudors. I like the no bumper look at the rear and I like the wheels hiding in the wells. Not chopped, just dropped. Get the bodywork completed - paint it however you like - a winner at any meet where sophisticated hotrodders congregate.
