Im building a 49 shoebox that is c notched and bagged but with the stock rear end,I want to go 350/350 with a rearend to keep up with the rest of the drive train and was wondering what others here have used. I have heard S 10 or maybe Buick Regal ? I believe the stock rearend is 57 1/2 inches from axle end to axle end. Any ideas?

Check a early Mustang or Maverick - should be a bolt on.

You might be able to build a 4 link to work with the bags using the Regal, Cutlass, Chevelle, Monte Carlo rear with the factory brackets on the rear. There should be plenty of stuff already out there in the lowrider market if you hunt a bit.

If you were running leaf springs I'd suggest a Ford Grenada or Merc Monarch rear end from 79/80 or so.

Go with a maverick rear if you can find one.... but they're getting harder and harder to come by.

I used a Currie "hot rod" universal application 9". Since you're in OC you can just go an pick it up from them in Anaheim. It's just a bit more narrow than stock and makes removing the rear tires a HELL of a lot easier. It doesn't come with any bracketry on it which would make your job easier since you're doing a 4 link anyway.

does anyone know the width of the mavrick rear end? I really could use some more space to get my wheels out, so somthing as narrow as 54 inches could be used on my car. I checked out the currie site and its a little steep for my budget so I gotta stick with CL or the Boneyards.

my '51 has S10 rear and is a bit too narrow because have to run very narrow rims 'n' tires. might use some wheel spacers to move tire outwords slightly. have a '66 Mustang rear that I have not tried yet. search: crankshaftcoalition.com for some measurements.

He is the expert on all to do with shoebox fords and has a website just for them--he also supplies the world with parts for them as well.

  9. I used a maverick rear in mine. I ran it as-is for awhile but spring pad spacing was a fraction of an inch off from the stock rear...put the rear springs in a bind. Also, pinion angle was wrong with stock maverick spring pads and the rear was off to one side about 3/16ths inch.
I cut the maverick pads off and centered the rear, set pinion angle with new pads and lived happily ever after.
Oh, BTW.....flange to flange measurement of maverick was withing 1/2 inch of the stock axle.
