great looking car lost to history. save them don't crush them.

  8. John,
I've been a Pontiac guy all my 49 years. The faster the Pontiac was, the more I sought to learn about it. Over the years, I've collected and talk to numours people about various Pontiac powered cars. not sure if your interest is in Pontiacs or this particular one.
this car appears to be Pontiac powered but, I cannot be 100% sure. I've never seen a Pontiac with injector stacks that high. But, that does not mean he could have made them or had them made. After much study, it appears from the side view picture that is has chrome 389 style valve covers. It is definately a wedge engine with siamesed intake ports but, that could also meana small or big chev.
The 2 pictures posted are the only 2 pictures I have ever seen of this car and I have Never seen anything written about it. Surely, now with internet and 'old' private pics surfacing, Hopefully, more pics and info will come up on this GTO.
Obviously, it had a very short life. GTOs were extremely popular in 1966 and they got a lot of magazine coverage. If this thing showed up at any of the bigger events, surely it would have been photgraphed.
What is strange to me is even though it got a color 2 page spread, there was nothing written about it!
Another strange thing is , if you study the 2 pics, it appears they may have been shot at the same time! Look at the smoke pattern under the car, almost identical.
Weird, only 2 pics of this car and possibly at the same time.
It could have been wrecked, destroyed otherwise ( trailer accident as an example ), parked in the barn and forgotton about or something but, it has not been seen or heard from since early 1966. It would be an interesting find indeed if it still exists.

If you, or anyone else, is interested in Pontiac racing history, I have a page on my site dedicated to them.
I too, would like to learn more about this GTO.

What is the smoke from? Fireburnout? Don't think so. very odd that smoke. There shouldn't be any smoke at launch, esp with the wheels in the air and the smoke is ahead of the tires and it ain't comin from the engine.

  12. Well, that is more info on the car than i have ever seen. Early pics too. Good to know it was Pontiac powered.
Where did you find this info?

What is your interest in this particular car?

Anyone know what ever happened to Don Gay's AWB '66 GTO?

  15. Gays 66 GTO funny was sold and became the Blue Bandit. It also got a stretched front end. Word has it that the car still survives but, no proof. There is also a clone of it in Texas last I heard.
Originally it was built by Jay Howell and is based on an original GTO (not a gl*** body).
    Hope this helps some.

First of all, this photo obviously was taken at Bremerton Raceway. Secondly, many years ago (probably mid to late 70's), I looked at a 66-67 "GTO", that had been an ealy funny car. Painted a faded red, red plexigl*** type side windows, chromed tube axle, but no engine/trans. It was in the Lake Stevens-Marysville area at the time. I wonder IF it could have been the same car? Don't remember much more about it, not even the price, or why I went to look at it, or how I knew about it. Maybe someone else can add something about the car I looked at. In your photos, it has "Olympia" on the doors, in the same pattern/script of the Olympia Beer Co. who must have sponsored the car. I don't even know if Olympia Beer is still around. If they are, you may want to check with their P.R. folks. Butch/56sedandelivery.

I'm very interested in finding out what happened to this car as I am a Pontiac fanatic and work a few blocks away from the old **** Lewis Pontiac dealership (long gone). The Olympia brewery mentioned earlier in this thread was shut down several years ago (was owned by Miller by that time).

Have you tried contacting the local GTO clubs www.northwestlegends.com (Seattle area) and www.goatherd.com (Portland area) to see if any of the members know of the car?

My dad was the manager of **** Lewis Pontiac in Olympia, WA for about 20 years.

The history that I remember was that **** Lewis hired a couple of local legends as mechanics to build and race the GTO. Bill Crow was one but I forget the other, maybe Kent Harp. It was originally white and named the Park Tiger, playing on the dealership name of **** Lewis Pontiac/Cadillac Park.

They got it running shortly before I went to Viet Nam and ran it a few times at Shelton. The first time out was kind of memorable for me as the wind snapped that hood right off - must have gone 50' straight up in the air :)

As I recall, regardless of it's success - or not - the novelty of it wore off for the business guys and the real world of expenses set in. Kind of hard to justify a full time 2 guy crew for it, and parts, travel and all that stuff, so the guys were put in the shop to work on regular cars. They got fed up with that setup and left. No interest left for the car so the dealership sold it.

Next time I talk to my dad I'll see if he remembers anything about it.

BTW - Back in the day it was not uncommon for everyone in town to use a similar logo to the Olympia Brewing Company. Doubt if they had anything to do with the car, and that script is not the brewery script, just similar. "It's the Water" - the City of Olympia's small claim to fame, well along with the Fleetwoods!

And my memories of that hood blowing off could be why, in the pictures of it in white, it has no hood!

Quick followup. Talked to my dad tonight and he remembers it about the same as I did. The car was campaigned for about two years. Other than solo runs, it won a total of ZERO races. Now that is from my 90 year old dad, so maybe it was marginally better than that, but was pretty close.

The Olympia on the side was simply for the location of the dealership - the brewery had nothing to do with the car. To it's last race, it was "The Park Tiger", not the Olympian or whatever.

On a strange note the Olympia brewery was in Tumwater a town that shares a border with Olympia, I see kids all the time with that logo tattooed on them, also the local fire depts use it.

You might be able to find Scott Lewis (**** Lewis' son) around Olympia. I think he has (or had) a business converting tugs into luxury yachts. He worked at the dealership as a mechanic during that time period.

Another is Rich Turner. I think he still owns Olympia Auto Body down by the old dealership. I think he was a body guy for **** Lewis, but maybe not. Things get cloudy at my age :)

My buddy Steve at Capitol chev worked the parts dept a lewis cadillac at that time too. if it needs to be done we can find out. I still think Rahn Redmond is the key to were it is now.

I talked to the guy who had the rear-end and he said the car was crushed sometime in the 80's. I sure hope not.
