1084 is the shock number theres got to be an other number or a chart with stroke and id and od of bolting holes
i ***ume you are trying to cross it so you can buy it local and cheaper. i have been told several times is the past that the original application for the p & J rod shock was some sort of tractor seat. does anyone know if that true? i can't believe they are special built for them . they are like $89 a pair now and i'd like to get them cheaper too. i did spend some time in the Monroe catalog and couldn't find anything that was close
Why would P&J tell you where to buy the shock cheaper? And doesn't it have Pete & Jakes stamped on it? It might be custom made for them.
I beleive they are the same dimesions as a c3 corvette rear shock without the upper tube sheild. Not sure if the valving is the same but I have used vette ones and they seem to work fine. Also with some searching an air shock can be found for that application also. Sizes are 7/16 upper and 5/8 lower.
I know this is weird, but a 90 Ford Explorer has 3 shocks in the rear. Two realllllllllly long ones and a short one. Take a look in the bone yard or online somewhere to order shocks.
Just a interesting tid-bit of info: The Pete & Jakes shock is built by Gabriel in Quebec, Canada, specifically for them and is only available from them or their dealers. Got that info direct from Gabriel. If you don't like paying more for them, think us us poor Canadians, paying LOTS more for a product from the US that is made in Canada Canuck
And this kind of **** is why many well known American hot rod companies are going out of business every year. Hell, why not just weld on a big'ol brace and use Walmart pickup shocks. They've gotta be cheaper, right? P&J invests hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars to get the sizing down, the dampening rate just right and buy hundreds for inventory, so you can beat them out of sale to save $50 bucks? You're a real Patriot.
I'm on the same page as Fritz.... Noticed a lot of "Speedy Bill" bashing the other day. It's guys like the OP looking for cheap replacements that cause good US companies like P&J to struggle to keep the doors open, and companies like Speedway to just give up and get the parts made cheaper so they can sell more. They are not as greedy as they are practical. I had a hot rod a few years ago with a P&J frame. M/cylinder went out, so I dropped it...looked at it....decided I knew what it was - and was WRONG. Called P&J, they had one in the mail next day....at a reasonable price (considering it's a well-built frame with all items in concert with each other BY DESIGN. I hear this **** out at the airport all the time...guys lamenting the cost of aircraft parts - no matter what they fly. Yeah, it's expensive to own a plane (or a boat, or a hot rod, or collector cars), so if you can't afford it....don't cheap out...GET out!! phew...must be time for my meds dj
For a couple of decades my information is that the P&J rear shocks were '63-'67 Corvette rear shocks. I had a contact at Monroe shocks that confirmed that. For what that is worth I put it out there. Frank
I like Jerry and Jason, I have used their shocks. But, the new Bielsteins that ElPolacko helped with are light years ahead. Adjustable, vintage shrouded look etc...........
Slippery slope... On one hand P&J's should be supported if your going the bolt together route using THEIR design, but on the other hand this place is/was about doing it yourself in the old ways. A better question would have been..."What shock will work with an F1 bracket and a fabricated bottom mount." Then we could look at your pics of the bracket and copy YOUR ideas! LoL
does every thread on here have to turn into a bashing? a guy asked a simple question no wonder i don't come her much anymore
'50 Plymouth, and they have a nice shroud on top for us traditional guys. It was the shortest one I could find with the correct ID for the F-1 arm.
He didn't ask "what shocks would be good for use on my ch***is?" I think he asked in so many words "...how do I go around P&J to keep them from 'profiting' from the sale of replacement shocks on my ch***is?" There are numerous rants on here every month about another American company going under and ain't it terrible! Well, I just think some people don't look at their own behavior and connect the dots. Vic's probably a great guy, and it wasn't personal - but we all need to support the people (most hot rod companies are just rodders, not corporations) that put their money and time into engineering better products for us. (I have no connection with P&J)
