I have a set of 15" OEM steel wheels that we need to have widened. The issue is that we wish to retain the stock hubcaps (held on by steel clips). The stock wheel width is 5 1/2". I woukld like to have the centers removed & placed in 15X7 rims. Does anyone know of a TRUSTWORTHY place in the Detroit area that can do this? In an a 2009 issue of STREET RODDER (and ROD & CUSTOM), Wheel Vintiques had a new wheel product that was supposed to be just what we were looking for. When I contacted them, I was told they pulled the product from the market for further testing. It seems the clips they were using would not hold the caps securely. These OEM rims came on our 48 DeSoto. The clips used on FoMoCo of the same vintage will not work.
These guys are the best. I took some college welding cl***es from the origional owner. Don't know if he's still there... http://www.weldcraftwheels.com/ Dan
used to be a guy around here that installed old centers in wider white spoke wheels with centers removed. the guys that widen them for a living use old centers with new hoops.
HAve widened many stock rims as well as Cragars . It is not rocket sceince. just steel. Cut , have a band made the width you need it widened. Carfully tack the band in place and check and recheck then weld a bit at a time till done. The tack in llace and check, is the hard part. Don
I contacted James. really easy to deal with I'm sending him some 38 ford wide five rims to have widened to 10" from 4"
Some years back a friend bought a late model Malibu with widened rallyes. The car and work was done in the Bay City area. Name of business is long forgotten though. Sorry.
Has anyone had any work done by Pioneer Wheel in Minneapolis MN? (612-331-1311) I would like to widen a pair of 35 Ford Pickup wire wheels for our shop project at Bloomington Kennedy HS. We have upgraded to a 38 Ford ch***is- is there any other options? Thanks, Bill
Those wheels could have very well been done at my shop Burrell Enterprises. I did a lot wheel work for a period of time when I was involved in off road racing and Dune buggys. This would have been in the 70's possibly. Frank
