Any one I know who has a shop is drinkin real hard lately to alleviate stress, if you got a bag of money or a rich auntie go ahead but you might be building a lot of shop cars for a while.

Yeah, you're a ****ing genius.. open a hot-rod shop.. yea do it..
if you have an insane huge pile of money you want to make really small, or vanish.
Or you live in your mom's ba*****t and don't need any income what-so-ever..
it's not like on t.v., money's never a problem on t.v. >>> o.k. maybe open a t.v., and put your hotrod shop in there.. !!ha-ha!!
Trust me when i say, if it's your hobby, and you enjoy it.. keep it that way...

if you are good at what you do, chances are people will come to you looking to get stuff done.

most of us started small, and worked out of home garages, etc. as the demand grew, you get a small building, and eventually grow to the size of place that you have a tolerance for. shopo owners will know what the term tolerance for means. some guys can handle a hundred employees, other go crazy with one.

Just to open a shop cols as an investment without a bunch of talent would be a bad idea in my book. ........ a day dont go by that i dont wonder if i shoulda opend a pizza stand instead.

I'm sure there are some, but I don't think this is the best venue to be looking for business partners.

Yeah, sure wouldn't be the easiest thing to do. But most shop owners I've met have a different meaning of what a bad economy and being broke is. The business owner, it might mean he has to give up flying as often in his private jet, put his house in florida up for sale, and be left with only 3. Yet still has money to buy a couple new muscle car toys. On the other hand, for the workers, it means you don't get uniforms anymore, so you have to get your own clothes dirty, you have to buy and bring in your own rags, gloves and soap if you want to have somewhat clean hands, Besides doing your own job, you have a whole lot of extra responsibilitys, doing the jobs of others that are laid off, at the same pay you've been at forever, and you don't really need health insurance anymore.

  11. WOW!!! This sounds just like the shop I worked for for 10 years before I got laid off in January!!

The "Owners" I know went without for years before they EVER paid themselves, I don't know any that fly in private jets or own three homes and the few I know personally that are still in the game are back to doing without a check, still pay the property taxes, liability ins, work comp, unemployment, utilities, etc....

Personally I think your full of **** and don't personally know shop owners with private jets but its your "story" you tell it.

And why you haven't you opened a shop yet?

That space can be used for alot of different fabrication.

A good friend of my family fabricates pieces/restores high end vintage bikes but his paycheck comes from owning a successsful wrought iron and decorative steel shop in the Seattle area catering to commercial construction. He has been able to weather this economy selling wrought iron architectural elements to communities that are putting money into historic developments and find value in using common elements to visually tie old buildings together.

Do you know 5 - 6 guys that would be able to cough up $150 a month to share the spare to work on their own stuff and maybe a few side jobs to keep the booths busy?

Man, I started in a one bay garage attached to a house painters hide out. $650 a month sounds like a heck of a deal. I was reading an article the other day about a guy who started out just fixing the junk he could find to work on, he finally found his niche and it was totally different from who he thought it would be.

You will have to find the right customers, Guys with money who will spend what it takes to get a car done right won't be the guy you think it is. No insult intended, but I wouldn't expect much business from HAMB members.

in our area hot rod shops come and they go just as quickly. there are only a few that have survived this recent economy.

even at 650 a month plus utilities plus taxes, plus inspections, plus INSURANCE, cause god forbid a car catch fire and burn up a couple hundred thousand dollars worth of customers cars that you are now responsible for...

in my opinion I would say if you are serious and really want to do this,
(and I say this because I watched a really close friend of mine make it work like this)
take that $650 a month and finance a nice garage behind your house and start out there.

keep your day job untill you have the shop paid for and there is enough work coming in to warrent growth.

seriously though, if you add it up even at 650 a month you are roughly gonna have to cover at least a solid $1500 a month just to cover the shop, then there is the mortgage on the house and kids braces and car payments, let alone a catasrophy happen...

trust me bro it may seem like a swell idea but pay your dues in your own garage first.

dont be another statistic with a **** ton of money wasted for no reason...

650 a month? For 3000 sq feet, With an overhead door? 3 months free? In Chicago even in this **** economy this space would be 4k per month, something is very wrong in Dodge. 650 a month is not covering the property taxes. The gas bill will be more and youre in warm Georgia. If youre getting a free place to play house go play in it, just watch what you sign for a lease. And yes 650 is free.

there are small towns with deals like that. you wont make a dime from locals. i really really hate to say this but the only way to make money is to build the r-rod. cheap, nothing has to be right and lots of idiots on ebay and craigslist pay a ton of money for them. i now have a shop in my back yard but i travel with a 36' trailer to do work. business is good if you have a shop in 48 states. also ive had to start building metal art to actually make some enough money to pay for more than the bills. i personally do not build the r-rods but a guy i know about 20 miles away does and he puts out 2 a month. 4000 profit on each. i just cant make myself build a **** bucket.

either way if your young just do what you can, live and learn, never stop dreaming.

  29. in 1972 i got 2800 sq ft and started painting cars for $65 ea
light bill was about $20 a mo, and I had to get out and get a job and pay off my loans and house earning $5 as hour as heavy equip mech, NOW THAT WAS A LEARNING EXPERIENCE
if you are going into painting i would imagine $1200 will cover materials on a really nice car
you will always be missing tools you will need so all profits will go for more STUFF:eek:

AND THINGS WILL NOT BE LIKE THEY WERE 15 YEARS AGO WITH EVERYONE TRYING TO THRUST MONEY INTO YOUR HANDS BECAUSE they had so much they could not spend it all

i went to college, seen the SBA and marketed a theme and a name and built up my business, charged enough and had a merry time
then we hit 1998 and the skids hit , i was disabled and started peddling the leftovers and playing with my toys:eek:

reasoned the place is available is because a body shop was there last year and the owner hasn't been able to rent it. my friend that has the BMW repair shop next door has been there for 6 months and he is doing well.

i wonted to do more then just hot rods ,,,,,mini trucks,, muscle cars,,, air ride,,you name it what ever it takes to pay the bills
