I have the opportunity to pick up a '57 Chevy rear with new bearings that has a '62 Corvette carrier that has 4:56 gears and a factory posi. Is this rear strong enough for a HA/GR ? I know it depends on drive train which I have not decided yet. Possibly the 144" Ford stroker if I get my stuff back from the IRS (not holding my breath) I know these were often swapped for the Olds rears in racing applications because they were weak, but for the price and lower power level I thought it might be a good deal and somewhat retro/nostalgia as well. Thanks, ScottV
Probably a "no sweat" choice under 300 HP. Given the weight and HP of a 'Vette vs the weight & HP of an HA/GR I think your conclusion's good. I'd wonder if 4.56'll tach a stroker too high, and what the over-all weight is. We're running 4.10s and going through at about 5200 on 28" hides. How 'bout those of you running 4.5? range rears chiming in on your top end tach?
... is 1/8 mile, I was thinking maybe have 2 sets of gears with one for the 1/4. Would that make me one of the "Big Boyz"
In the 60's I had a Thames with a '57 Chevy rear end. 4.56 gear. 10" slicks. ran mid 10's and never broke. It was a light car and I didn't put all that many runs on it. I would not hesitate to use it in a Hambster. Especially with the small inch engine you are planning. You will have to estimate the top speed you anticipate and the rpm's your engine will make max horsepower, along with tire size, in order to determine the best gear ratio.
