good question... I am draining mine out of my 63 fairlane this weekend .. I bought 5 quarts, will fill the 4 then check as I add the 5th to see where I stand.
My '56 Fordomatic transmission manual states: "Add five quarts of Automatic Transmission Fluid - Type A to the transmission through the filler tube. Run the engine at idle speed for about two minutes, then add four more quarts of fluid. Let the engine idle until it reaches its normal operating temperature. Do not race the engine. Move the selector lever through all the positions, then place it in the P (park) position. Check the fluid level and add enough fluid to bring the level up to the full (F) mark on the indicator. The approximate Fordomatic refill capacity is 9 quarts (6-cylinder cars and trucks), 9-1/2 quarts (8-cylinder cars and trucks), and 10-1/2 quarts (Thunderbird and Police Interceptor)."
Hi Guys, New to this forum. I am in Australia and have a 1956 Ford Fairlane Victoria . Can anyone help confirm exactly how many Quarts, Pints or Litres my 3 speed Fordamatic transmission will hold (not including the torque converter). I have a problem in that the car came with an incorrect dipstick and cut down filler tube (I suspect) when I purchased it so I cannot determine the correct fluid level. I thought if I drain the transmission (not converter) then refill with the correct amount I can then mark the full mark on a dip stick I have managed to modify. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.
55 and I believe some 56 Fords had air cooled automatic transmissions. Then in early 56 they went to oil cooled with lines up to the radiator. Don't know if the fluid capacities are the same.
From the 1955 Fordomatic manual: 9 quarts for 6 cyl cars and all trucks 9 1/2 quarts for all 8 cyl cars 10 1/2 quarts for Thunderbird and Police Interceptor And, from my ‘54/‘55 Mercury repair manual: 10 1/4 quarts for Mercomatic These capacities are for full fluid change including the converter.
