Hey Guys- need some help here- I have a good 1958 283 engine outa' a Corvette, but the heads are missing. A Buddy has a set of casting # 462626 350 heads he'll give me, but I'm concerned about the performance of the 350 heads on the lil' 283... like maybe not enuff compression, etc. Anyone out there that can give me some feedback on this idea ?? Or maybe this subject's been covered somewhere before ?? I'd sure appreciate it since I'm a novice on this subject.... Thanx in advance for your help... tbbronson in Orl.
There's a million threads on this if you search. 350 heads won't clear the bore so most guys run aftermarket or power pack heads. 305 heads work real well and are dirt cheap. There are few series that work well and some that don't. They even have 305 Vortec's available. I'm running some on my 283 that are # 601 heads but it has yet to be fired up. i would run the 305 heads with the 1.84 intake valves. with a little bowel work they will run just fine. the 350 heads have too big chambers. you would get no compression. if it is really a corvette block you could get more selling it to a corvette collector. then use that money to build a motor.
