Last year, I went to a garage sale and scored an early 60's vintage MAC machinist's tool chest that was full of MAC & S-K tools for next to nothing. This year, I went to a barn sale and found a 16-drawer rolling tool cart full of hand & pneumatic tools! Now I can finally get rid of the old Craftsman cart & chest I bought back in the early 70's........... As they say, luck is better than skill!
Nice find. Sometimes out here you can find a few things for almost nothing, but usually everyone thinks their **** is made out of gold and they want an arm and a leg.
Deals like that are available, look for the 'Estate Sales' that where grandpa died and the relatives are selling the whole house, head for the garage and do it early in the morning....
I am a firm believer that you never get rid of a tool box or its tools. Those items should be heirlooms in your garage. No matter how beat up or dirty save them to p*** along. Keep the hobby alive
Great score ! I am a firm believer of yard and garage sales . I have gotten so many super great deals for my cars over the years . The last great deal was a factory Ford Mustang Hurst 4 speed shifter for $5 !!!! It was perfect with all the brackets and shift rods ! i have gotten tools , engines , and a lot of parts to build my car that was so guys/gals NEVER p*** up a good garage sale or yard sale ! I always find good tools that are USA made in boxes for .50 to $1.00 ! Remember they all have a life time warranty ! You just never know what is at the end of that table that is full of damn baby cloths ! Retro Jim
Way Cool! When I bought my house four years ago, it was a probate sale, the previous owner had p***ed so the grandson was selling the house. On our first walk through the real estate broker said that the owners had pulled everything out of the house and what was left went with the house. There was 2 completely full Kennedy machinist tool chest in the garage and a grandfather clock in the house, I was stoked. Well when it came time for us to take possession of the keys the first thing I did was run to the garage to check out the bounty of tools in the two chest, well the grandson decided to come back and take the 2 chest and the grandfather clock, all I was left with was 10 gallons of used motor oil and a box of burned out fluorescent tubes....It still bothers me to this day....
very very odd .. please stay away from garage sales and estate sales .. you will find only xmas decorations and worn out kids clothes buy only online from unkown sellers who will never sell you junk or overcharge you...
If the deal was made for house and contents prior...I would have put the sale in limbo until the boxes and clock were returned. They altered the deal after the fact. You should have pushed the Realtor's ****ons and you would have gotten what you expected from the deal. They WANT their commission. As for the waste oil and lead containing fluorescent tubes...the sellers are also responsible for all enviro remediation. You got the shaft TWICE!
Estate sales are always a good place to hunt. My current employment is setting up estate sales. This week I finished 2, one was a longtime worker for Kittenger Furniture, had a great wood shop at home & the other was a Harley guy. Both have lots of new & vintage tools along with all the other neat stuff ac***ulated along life's journey.
Excellent score! I picked up a lot of tools that when when I was doing my tool & die apprenticeship back in the early '70s. I also found a lot of great garage tools at garage and yard sales being sold by retired car mechanics that have served me well over the last 45 years. Deuce Roadster, it's just as well I don't suffer from toolbox envy! My 5 foot rollaway (overflowing with tools) and Kennedy machinist's bench toolbox (with two-drawer base) pales in comparison to the pair you've got in your garage.
Nice scores but I wouldn't sell off the old boxes unless there was just no room to put them. Having the extra boxes will let you keep things like your body tools separate from the regular tool box. You can even segregate the metrics over there by them selves for when the ot car needs attention.
Well, ****. I thought I did good at the last garage sale with a $10 metal hand-carry box with an ***ortment of tools including some stuff I knew I'd use, and a Ford wrench... I sold the empty box at a swap meet a few days later for the $10. Of course since then the handle on my newfangled plastic box, broke, I should have kept the old metal one in the first place, but...
Randy, Someting tells me thats NOT your toolbox'(s) OR garage. I can't believe that you would have such a messy, cluttered tools/storage. Just looking at your cars "Mr. Clean" is more the persona I'd expect. Am I wrong? Frank
Not in my shop but they are my Snap-On boxes I have those boxes at a friends ... where I try to do paint work. My shop is over full of stuff ... I have 4 MAC boxes @ home and two Kennedy boxes ( from when I was a tool and die guy ). I cut down 119 trees behind my shop, hauled in over 100 dump truck loads of dirt in preparation for a NEW, larger shop. My building contractor fell off a roof and has been disabled for 12 months. I had already signed a contact with him for the new SHOP. I have gotten my deposit back. So I have been working in my old, small, messy shop With both the 32's finished ... and my current retirement plans ... the wife and I are talking about not building the new shop ... and selling off a BUNCH of the parts and pieces. In fact, I have SOLD a good bit of Deuce stuff off in the last 6 months. I have come to the realize the facts ... I am never going to build another 32 Ford and will not live long enough use all this stuff. I might as well liquidate most of it ... and enjoy the $$$. Randy
