Does any one make a trans adapter for a 55 packard 352 to a late model GM auto trans? Or does any one know what it would cost to have one custom built?
someone i know got an adapter kit for his packard to bolt a 727 trans to the 352. I remember it was pretty pricy like a 1000 bucks for the kit. if your intrested i can find out where he got it from
JunkieVonJoyo's '55 Clipper has the 727 trans with the adapter. The trans had to be rebuilt but the rebuilder said the adapter was really nice and thoughtfully machined. If a 727 can handle a Hemi, it can handle a Packard.
Kustom?? on here bought an adapter that mated a 727 tourqueflight to his 55 packard 352....pm him, he'll fill in the details.........
lol, were all talking about the same guy and car, for 1000 bucks its not just the adapter, it comes with everything you need to adapt a 727 trans to it like the linkage and trans mounts thats a direct bolt to the packard
hey jared guess what? i got a 727 trani and i have a feeling the price will be around free even though you are still an asshole
I was just under my 55 Packard last night working on the shift linkage for this conversion...The kit is like 900 or so bucks...but it includes more than an aluminum ring. It also has an aluminum spool that is essentially a big spacer. The shift linkage is confusing at best...and modifications may need to be made. I have to say the folks who offer this kit are really nice. But the instructions for installation are also a bit confusing. There is a guy in va or pa or something that rebuilds the Twin Ultra...its expensive...but it original. I went with the 727 because I had heard the Twin Ultra was problematic when new. The 727 is also good because you can get rid of that trunion joint in the front of the driveshaft. Tim MBL
The kit is a good overall start you need to make some mods to there directions but the trans shop that did it had really no problem, doing that BUT WHATEVER YOU DO MAKE SURE YOU USE AN SFI FLEXPLATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I didnt the first time it broke in 30 miles in three pieces...The second time i had another trans shop put in a SFI but it was to late it must have damaged the front pump seal....which caused the trans to need to be rebuilt...thats why i sold it i was into the trans, conversion plus labor 2 times for flexplate close to $4000.00 dollars that was it for me...any other help needed PM me i will try my best to help you.....KUSTOM??
Ancient thread, but has anybody come out with a Packard adapter for modern trannies? One that hopefully doesn't cost $900? Auto or manual, either one?
There is a place in Minnesota I was just told that will make an adapter for any trans to any engine. The guy now has a GM 700R4 in a 62 T-bird with an FE motor. I'm sure somebody on here knows of this company, but if not, I can call the guy and ask him myself.
Any info would be appreciated, and thanks. I've got a 352 V8 out of a '55 Clipper that looks like it might take a re-ring overhaul. It has the original auto tranny, but I wouldn't even think of trying to get that thing rebuilt. If I can hook it to a 700R4 or T-5 or something, I'd likely go ahead and rebuild the engine to use in a T project. Otherwise, it might be time for that big Chinese smelting furnace in the sky.
If you can find a stock stick shift bellhousing (thing '55 Golder Hawk) it has the same bolt pattern as Ford stick shift up to and including Top loader four speeds. But not the overdrive 4th style
"That place in Minnesota" is Bendtsens in Ham Lake, MN.............www.transmissionadapters.com...........good stuff judging by the unit I bought (Buick straight 8 to late GM) but you will pay around a $1000 for any well made adapter. You might also check with Wilcap in California. Ray
In fact any Packard manual bell (Clipper) will take a Ford pattern manual trans, although apparently the actual Packard one was a heavier duty unit. But 55-56 Ford and 55-56 Packard manual transmissions will physically interchange, or so I was told. Either way the manual trans Packard stuff is scarce as hell. I've come across two manual trans V8 Packards out of probably over 100 I've personally looked over - of the two, one was long stripped of all the manual trans stuff and the other a Packard guy was parting out because it had a bad frame. That was a good five years ago.
Of the two manual trans bellhousings I have. One I got when I was in a parts store and mentioned that I needed one but they were hard to find. The guy said he had one in the back of his Studebaker pickup outside, and I could have it. The other I got from the Studebaker Golden Hawk web site. Have passed on several bellhousing, flywheel, T-85 assemblys at $500 since I didn't want the whole kit.
For standard trans adaptations, memory says there usetawas a 352 Packard to early Ford adaptor from one of the big adaptor outfits (Crunch!!), and that allows easy addition of currently available adaptor to Chevy standard flange. Useless suggestion involving a part they probably made 2 of...
Anybody paying attention? Packard engines came in '55 Studebaker Golden Hawks, Nash and Hudson cars. These are where most of the standard bellhousings are. Now If I found two and have seen atleast two more that i didn't get because it was the whole trans and all. You should be able to find one if you try. So try.
Thanks for the info, fellas. I'll try to ask some friends that are into Studebaker stuff. I have a 3 spd out of a '61 Ford full size with a 6 cyl, I wonder if that will fit a Stude bellhousing? Anybody know what flywheel could be used? Thanks.
Not to quibble...........but for sake of accuracy.......Studebaker Golden Hawk with Packard 352 was 1956......not '55.........may make a difference while searching. Ray
Yeah I guess so. You may not be able to find a '55 Golden Hawk. As far as the guy who asked about the flywheel. Packard comes to mind.
get a 352 and the lot out of a 55-56-57 hudson. nobody likes the nash bodied hudsons much. well, there are a few devotees of them... the bodies die. think there is someone dismantling one on ebay at the moment, not sure if its a 352 V8. take a look though
