hi joe after all this time it finally died but it went out how it ran doing about 75 on 81 in pa i have a sbc and trans and if i have to it would go in just to keep it alive i,m going tonight to check out a 62 292 out of a truck claims it a good running motor thanks but no mopars still working the bugs out of vinny,s 52 dodge with the 360 in it. but i hope to keep a y-block in it

  2. I vote for another Y-block, as does Ozelle the '55 Ford. One of the finest truck motors ever put in a car.

I didnt get back to this post very quick, as I am putting another y-block in my own car... You have probably figured out on your own that the mounting from the 62 to your 58 will basically be the same. The truck may have used a different system, but the provisions are on the motor for either p***enger or commercial... I wish you the very best of luck and if you have a doubt about anything y-block oriented, please shoot me a PM. I would be happy to offer what little knowledge I might have...

Is the original Y-block rebuildable? Seems like an engine that lasted that long deserves to be rebuilt, if it is possible.

  6. 'Looking forward to seeing the old Ford on the road again with a "new" motor. East Coast car shows and cruises wouldn't be the same without "Loose Change".

Losing an engine that has served you so well for so long is like losing a member of the family. Sorry to hear it. Now, I'm a Chevy guy but I vote to keep it all Ford, too. I hope you're back up and running soon. Y blocks are cool!

  15. If you need any help with the Y just ask. ;)

  16. Thats to bad. I am sorry to hear that. I just got my first Y-Block a week ago in a '56 Ford. I ran it 3 hours to get home and no problems. I live in Saskatchewan and will soon be driving her down to South Dakota and then over to California. Hopefully all goes well. Good luck with getting your '58 running!

i got good service out of the old one a good set of pipes on a y-block nothing sounds sweeter .we pulled it apart today and it was redone and has 60 over pistons in it and the inside is pretty clean the manifold had the bolts out of it cause it,s a 57 4-barrel and a guy was going to buy it but never did i think water got in there it rusted a valve thats why were doing the heads and problemly put a cam in it as i,ve said it,s a great car had loads of fun with it hope you have as much with yours i will also tell you i.m a sbc man but i love the sound of a y-block

Glad you got another one! Sounds like all of the service you got out of the previous Y-block should have earned it proper burial, lol.

I can't believe I missed this post, Teddy! I've got a tear in my eye over your old motor!
Good luck with the new one....and in case you need any spare parts, I've got the leftovers from the Fonze's motor he sold Ed W. Block was no good, but I think I've got the rest of the pieces, if you need anything.
And, BTW, if you run into any weird things you can't figure out, the "engine rebuild" guy at Bontempo's is a real Y block fan. Knows ALLL about them.
Hey, is Five Points still going on this holiday weekend???

  24. teddyp check the crankshaft out on the new Y you just bought.. If it came out of a 62 dump truck it may have the forged steel crankshaft.. Good luck with it man..

nice car...Y blocks are cool engines

  27. I know I'm a little late with this but that #5 piston hitting the head is a sure sign of a rod being out. I'll bet it made a good knocking noise.

My sympathies on your loss. If it's any solace to you,
your old Y-Block lasted 52 years.....which is a heck of
a lot longer than the engineers who designed it, ever
expected it or intended it to last! To paraphrase the
Brits when one of their monarchs dies - "The Y-block
is dead! Long live the Y-block
    !" Rather than replacing
    it with a 390 (at least it's a Ford) or a SBC 'belly-****on
motor' (YUCK!!) I'd salvage what you can from the
original engine, find a rebuildable core and build another
one......and it'll probably go for another 52 years too!! :)

Don't know why that 60 Merc would only go 80??? with a 312. My cousin's 57 Fairlaine 4 dr. 292 2bll. automatic, 3:10 gears. I was with him and twisted of 5 speedo cables trying to see how fast it would go!! It would usually stay in 2nd till 85-88 mph before 3rd and then set you back again when it shifted. I would definetly go for another Y. Ther would be no other choice in my book.
