For once in my life I won a door prize at GG Indy. and picked a dropped 46" I beam. I have one now in the 32 and the sponsor said I can upgrade to a Chrome drilled axle. Any issues with drilled I beams.

Drilled vs. non-drilled, no difference in strength....

A drilled axle is about 2# lighter depending on how many holes of course.

i would stay away from the chrome. Somthing about hydrogen embrittlement during the chrome process.

I remember reading a thread on here about it.

Regarding hydrogen embrittlement, if you can find a heat treating shop, they can bake it at a low temperature and it will be ok after that. This does not affect the looks of the chrome.

  12. Also something about forged or cast...I don't know if that was addressed.

If the holes were drilled in varying diameters and with proper spacing, at 152 mph it would play Foggy Mountain Breakdown.

That is not true it does not start sounding like Foggy Mountain Breakdown until 173 mph! Please do not ask me how I know that...;)

I'd be all about the drilled, chrome depends on the ride it's going under. Congrats on the prize none the less!

As I recall it should be done right after plating(hrs) or it doesn't do much good. Frankly I wouldn't hesitate to run it as is.

Yes, it is best done right after plating but any time later is ok..It just takes longer in the oven.
