I put a speedster together with parts from an old Depot Hack in the 1940s. Last time it ran was 1953. Now the engine is frozen and it won't roll because I cant find any "neutral" position despite loosening all transmission bands. I thought to solve this by removing the U-Joint but it's not coming apart the way I (misremembered?). After disconnecting brakes, rear spring and 4 bolts holding the U-Joint to the trans, I lifted ch***is and expected to be able to pull axle, drive shaft and U-Joint free but it ain't working. I know the joint is pinned to the drive shaft, but I thought it should just slide out of the trans. Do I just need to pull harder?

Thanks in advance to anyone who hasn't forgotten how to do this stuff that seemed so simple when we were kids!

It does slide out of the trans, it's a square shaft in a square tube. Pull harder, I guess!

You probablly need some penetrating oil and pry harder or chain the front to a tree and get a good mule. or a come along ..The model t transmission has 3 bands. one for low gear, one for reverse, and one for brake. there is a spring on the rear of the ****** that holds the trans in direct high gear by compressing the discs like in a modern auto trans. the small arm on the driver;s side of the "hog s Head" cover is connected to the inside fork that releases the spring pressure. If the hand brake is adjusted correctly when it is pulled back to straight up the cam on the cross shaft moves the shift arm to release the spring pressure so you will be in neutral. pull the handle all the way back to tighten the emergency brakes in the rear wheel hubs, In cold weather you can jack up the rear end so the wheels can turn over since with cold oil the clutch discs are sticky and you don't get a good neutral. I just double checked my Speedster, It's apart and There Is No Pin holding the Square shaft of the U joint into the Square recess in the trans shaft<

If you need to unpin the U joint just undo the plugs and drive the pin out. Will they be lined up with the two holes?...................I'm betting no. Oh, almost forgot, Welcome to the HAMB!

Thanks a lot: Yoyodyne, Timothale, and The37kid. First, you confirmed what I thought I remembered about the design and the need to pull harder (that felt good even if it didn't work, and the idea of driving out the pin - which did work - but only after raising the right end of the axle by almost 45 degrees!) The car will now roll easily onto a trailer so my son can take over it's restoration. He's "RadioFlyer55" on this board, so you may be hearing more about this project.
