So i painted the shoebox using Eastwoods 70-72 GM Mulsanne blue metallic(single stage). No paint booth and 90 degree temp. The metallic does settle and can be tricky to get the pattern correct - or should i say "avoid dark spots".. ****.. for 120 bucks there is no excuse for ****ty *** primer. in my opinion..
thanks guys! im really happy with how it came out. it's not perfect but i learned a l lot. regarding the over spray - it's everywhere. but i did cover my cb750 and the wifes washer/dryer..
Just did my first paint job last weekend almost same color. The metallic was alittle tricky for me. Learned alot also, think Im ready to do another one. Your car looks great!
Dude, you got lucky, metallic on a 90 degree day, and that acapulco blue type color, you must have been workin your tail brother, how does it look in the sun? Did it flash and drop metallic on you or did it blend nice? Check it cause if it did you may be able to drop a coat or two on it to fix it if you act fast, I would show you my 90 degree day photos of a car that same color but the heat got it, and it was a ***** to strip, I salute you if it turned out nice, either way, I bet you wait till its about 75 next time, gets a little squishy about half way through the job don't it?. .
hey rustalot, post some pictures. I'm going to do the dash and door parts this weekend. white with a little blue flake and cover it in clear..
Hate to bring this up now, but should have planned to clear that while it was in there. Cut and buff is out of the question without a clear coat. To end on a positive note, it does look nice though.
francisco - so far so good. it blended really well except for a few small spots where i forgot to shake the gun. it's been a couple days now and i'm ***uming it's cured all the way? and yes - i will wait until a better temp next time. too hot and and i felt rushed..
it's an acrylic urathane single stage and the metallic is very small. I am thinking about scallops or striping. question - after the scallops are on can i use a scotchbrite pad and then re-clear?
Nice job!!! It came out better than my first paint job. It will look even better with some scallops. You will be amazed how much better a paint job looks when you have something to break it up a little. Todd
I was told that you should never sand on a single stage metallic paint, I was told that you will grab some metallic and pull it. If you are going to reclear I would wet sand with no co****r than 800 grit paper. I have found that a scotchbrite pad is not very consistant. Plus the fibers that work their way out of the pads tend to piss you off a bit. Take it for whatever you wish, I am Not a Bodyman. I just try and pay attention to hints along the way...... It does look nice as it is! CJO 13
cjo13 - that makes sense. i have some panels that i also sprayed thet i can use as test pieces before i go and **** it all up. otherwise i'm cool with just driving it like this for now.
I say leave it all blue, looks good that way. Throw some cl***y striping on the hood and decklid and roll...nice job by the way!
Id play with the pieces, its so hot that the paint dries fast and cures fast, I would do the 800 thing as well or higher, your concern is that if you clear the spot that the clear wont blend properly and will do odd things, I would not try to clear the whole car at this point, Id play around on the parts, tape in a line shoot the color, wet sand the cut or line, take a 2 inch wide tape fold it length wise, not a tight fold, just a loose circle, put some blocking paper to it about an inch from your cut line, clear it and try to feather towards that tape line, dont dump a lot on there, see if you can color sand that line out and make a nice cut line in the process. Have fun, even if you screw up this little experiment you're still learning, putz with it, thats how most of us learn.
right on. i will mess aroung with the panels and see what i can make happen. thanks for all of the input!!
Looks great to me as is ,I'm old and used a lot of stuff that never needed clear coat at all, nice high gloss . And striping is cool as long as it adds too the lines of the car. Way to many over do it,less is more, when striping is done well
Roll with it... I know I don't look so good up close, but from far, I'm a handsome devil... If you ain't trying to sell it, who cares! Be proud of your first paint job. Only a buyer, and yourself are the critical judges in this.
Ditto, I was trying to get to that. If you sand metallic single stage, the metal flakes will be cut and give a weird appearance. I would only sand what you intend to paint over with graphics or whatever. But don't sand an area and try to buff it or fix it since there is no clear. Good thing is, it was reasonable priced paint. It is also easier to work on that surface fine tuning any bodywork imperfections if you decide to shoot the whole car again soon. I sprayed mine for the summer just to get it sealed up, knowing the bodwork isn't perfect yet. I'll paint it again this fall, but that's no big deal - I can find all the tiny dings easier.
Looks real good man! What sprayer and air system did you use? I hope to be ready for paint in a couple of months and I'm diggin single stage urethane.
