Do you see any problem with running the cam lube down the holes beside the lifters.(not the lifter holes) Dont want to do the lash if i dont have to. Motor was rebuilt two years ago and never fired up. sbc
I don't think you could get enough lube on the lobes. If it's a roller I'd try it, but no way with a flat tappet cam. Make sure to add some type of zinc aditive if it's a flat tappet before starting. Shell rotella T diesel oil has more zinc than most oil and will help with break in. Make sure the engine starts right away and vary the rpm for a while with flat tappets also.
I wouldn't start without relubing. If you do, be sure to prelube with lots of zinc additive. Turn by hand prelube some more, turn over again and prelube some more. Like sstang06 says--be sure it starts immediately and run 15-20 min. @ 1500-3000 varying rpms. Good luck, whatever you decide
Not meaning to hijack but....................... How long can a flat tappet motor sit before it would get sketchy and you have to take it back down to pre lube?
Pull the dist. & spin up the pump with a pre-lube tool or make one up, this way your sure it's got oil to all the "right places"
I would drain and fill with fresh breakin oil then pull the distributor and use a drill and screwdriver tool to circulate the oil until it flows out of the push rods and rockers. Put the distributor back in and fire it up. Run for at least 15 minutes an varying RPMs up to about 2000. It should be OK then.
Yes Brad Penn makes great break in lube You can run it for while then change it to Brad Penn racing oil It has zinc in it for the falt tappet
