Hot Rods Deuce Roadster sighting in 'Middle of Nowhere' Kansas

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by HEMI32, Jul 9, 2010.

  1. Earlier this week, I was watching the latest episode of the (HAMB's most hated) History Channel television program:

    American Pickers Logo.JPG

Halfway through the episode (entitled "Getting The Boot"), the guys visit a gentleman by the name of Junior Evans.

Junior has an amazing Oil Can collection ... and a bunch of other "cool old stuff" ... including more Petroliana ... a wood-rim bicycle ... tons of "old car" parts ... and even some "old cars".

Among Junior's "old cars" was this '32 Roadster:

... and this '32 Tudor body:

Anyway ... I was just curious if anyone here on the HAMB knows Mr. Evans? ... or if anyone has any better pics of his roadster ... and/or info about it?

NOTE: Please don't make this a "drama thread" about the TV show or the hosts (and how they are "screwing up" our hobby)!

For those of you who missed the episode (or don't have cable or a satellite dish), the entire episode is available for on-line viewing at the History Channel website ... HERE.

NOTE: The segment about Junior Evans starts at the 22:55 mark.

Mr. Evans's HAMB handle escapes me now, but I think he was one of the 'elite' charter members of the first Pleasanton goodguys Roadster show (his '32 was inside with some of the Bay Area Roadsters)

I think that first picture is Randy's much younger, better looking brother. I'd bet he's pointing out an origonal 1932, '32 Deuce Henry steel 25 louver hood, some '32, 1932 3w hatch release levers and an origional Henry Deuce 3w cigar lighter that the owner didn't have a clue about.

    LOL :D

Considering the title of this thread, I figured Randy (@Deuce Roadster) would've posted here by now!

FYI ... The guy pointing to the AC Fire Ring Spark Plugs clock is actually "Frank" (one of the "American Pickers") ... and the gentleman in the black "Model 40 75th Anniversary" T-shirt and ballcap is Mr. Evans.

With 20,000 Posts on the clock you wouldn't have time for TV anyway.

Pickers is OK show....as previously mentioned, those two guys may know their oil cans, signs, bicycles, etc, but they're a bit less informed on cars. They did purchase something (US made coupe ???) a month or so ago (programming time) that was whole and took a bit to get it out of where it was stuck. Their "appraiser" priced it at about $500 to $1000 over what they paid. They have a Nash bathtub in their front lot as a sign for the business. I enjoy the show, but as to the cars they walk past - rather NOT have resellers scarfing up old barn finds, just puts a VAT on it that the hobbies (rodding and restoring) don't need.

Yeah it was a Dodge, may have been a 46, paid 5500 I think and you
are correct appraisal was not very much over the purchase price. He thought he stole it. They probably should stick to oil cans and signs.

Lmao i saw an episode where they bought a 39 plymouth business coupe for about 2000$ too much. and then they tried to sell it to all these hotrod shops for way to much and they got screwd. lmao suck to them. :D

all in all though, i like American pickers more than the other history cannel old shit show, pawn stars. LESS staged.

  17. I watched the episode where they bought e Studebaker... again for about what it was worth... by the time they got it home and flipped it, they about groke even or lost a little....

Don't watch much TV - that one is better than most IMO.

They seem to treat people fairly, especially the widows and elderly.

My only problem with the show is that I'm not making the big bucks cruising around the country buying cool stuff!

  19. my input...or inbut...would be he know's what he's got...on the other hand...yes it would be nice to know it's history...

  20. I dont watch much either... but my wife called me in to watch the episode... I told her they paid too much if they want to turn a decent profit.

I do agree that most people will take advantage of a situation for financial gain, and moreso if the person is older or a woman.

I've always told my wife that if something happens to me, to move all the vehicles with the help of some friends to secure them. Too many times I have heard of stories of folks passing with lots of toys and the toys all go missing in the days immediately following.

Tools and toys.. close friends know what its worth, and I've entrusted them to help her if anything happens to me.

Was that cowl section outside Mr. Evans shop a 1932 Ford or a 33-34 Pickup item? Thanks HEMI32 for starting the thread, I'd rather see those two guys walk past the cars, and NOT ask the price. Does anyone know their eBay ID?

  22. The pickers may have learned their lesson on buying cars. Now that they have been traveling way out of their Iowa roots, the cost of transportation home will keep them buying stuff they can stuff in the van.

That's funny, how much did they make on that boot that filled half the van? Do you ever notice they NEVER pack anything?

I have been busy ... hunting down 25 vent hoods and 32 3W cigar lighters :D :D I saw the episode and just laughed at what the two pickers were interested in. I do believe that they may have learned their lesson trying to buy old cars. They need to stick to things they know about.

    Well, he is younger :)
But I am much taller, thinner and have much more hair than he does ... :D

The photo below was taken on Thursday before the LA Roadster event while I was at the Limeworks Speed Shop party in Whittier California.

  26. UPDATE:

I've received several PMs from Midwest HAMBers regarding Junior Evans' Deuce roadster ... two of which claim that it is not an old (survivor) Hot Rod ... but rather a more recent build using a Brookville repro body.

Considering Mr. Evans estimated the value of his roadster "in the neighborhood of $30,000" ... I tend to agree that the car isn't a Henry real steel '32 Roadster ... but rather a (~15K) Brookville bodied car.

Nonetheless ... it's still a cool little roadster ... and I'd like to see more pics of it!

  27. If you just go by brookville's prices....~$12k for the body, ~$8k for rolling chassis......so you're up to $20k at that point.

...then you gotta put a motor in it, paint it, wheels and tires, wiring, steering, radiator, etc....

$30k may even be conservative if he was buying all new crap for it.

  28. I'm always yelling at those two clowns of 'Pickers show. They are farking idiots, but highly entertaining to watch them hassle these old timers who are simply looking at these two shitbirds and wondering whether to use 00 buck or bird shot when it comes time to "advise" them to leave the property. Funny stuff.

Like it or not, they are a couple of guys running up and down the highways trying to make a living doing something they love.

  30. I agree. Me and my old man used to do almost the same stuff they did looking for old cars and gas pumps.
