Pittsburgh Craigslist there is an ad for a Ford 100E engine, trans and rear with 20,000 miles. Listed for $1500. Were these used in Populars? Any history on these that would be neat to hear about! Not sure if they have value in the traditional world, but thought it was an interesting engine.
They have some interest in England for vintage style specials. There is some speed gear for them in England. The 3 speed trans had the worst gear ratios known to man, so is virtually unusable. Definitely not worth the asking price IMO.
My second car in 1966 was a 100E Prefect 4 door sedan. The little sidevalve 4 banger is a 'modernised' version of the Anglia/Prefect/Popular engine from the 40's. It has a water pump as opposed to thermal cooling, a slightly higher compression, 12 volt electrics, and ****** all power. There is some speed gear around for them, but I soon switched to Hillmans as they had 1600cc OHV 4 cylinders! Cheers, Glen.
A two door Prefect? Most (all?) were Anglias I thought. (Although I heard South Africa made 2-door Prefects)
These are expensive engines to rebuild so a 20K miler would be good. But even at 20K miles it will have worked hard 1172cc and about 30HP. Getting extra power from them reliably is big bucks and low return. You could buy a running Flathead in the US for that money and have something far more useable. Rich
I had a 57 Anglia in high school. It was slooooow.36 horse side valve with a 3sp. A 36 horse VW would smoke it. Wish I still had it.
I think you'll find that all of the 100E series Fords sold in the USA were called Anglias, as were the earlier E93A models, hence why Americans have "Anglia" g***ers and Kiwis, Brits and others had "Pop" (short for Popular) g***ers. I think the asking price is rather steep, IMHO.
That was a lot of money to pay in my opinion. When I was running my Pop 2-3 years ago, as a rule I wouldn't pay more than £50 for an unknown engine. Gearboxes are two for a penny too. If you guys want them then think about arranging for one to be shipped over by a friendly English hotrodder like you guys do for us with flatheads etc. There are hundreds of these little engines sitting in people's sheds. 36hp as standard. You can get 65hp out of them with a few bolt on goodies, a cam and a bit of simple porting work at home. More than that and it'll cost a lot
I just picked up a supposedly rebuilt runner for £85 and a trans for £25. Will likely stick it into the Model-Y for the time being - if I can source some bolt-on speed goodies for grins, I will, if not, oh well...the Y will eventually get a V860 once back in the states anyway. $1500 is far too much, IMO. There is a mechanical OD available for the 3-spds...I'm going to see about fitting one of those as the 5.2:1 rear gear ratio needs a bit of help! Haha!
The one on the left is mine, before i cut it up, It had the 1172 side valve bored out +20 with a stromberg carb, i also adapted a later 105e anglia 4 speed box to it which inproved it alot! I used it everyday and clocked up 13,000 miles in 10 months as my first car.
