I had a 54 Bel Air with a 56 Cad Eldorado V-8 with dual fours and the big bat wing oil bath air cleaner in it. This wasy back in 1961. It fit in and cleared everything. Was terrible for gas mileage though!!

Thanks for all the info guys. I took the car to Santa Maria with the 235 in it, and it went with no problems. Just topped of the oil, and trans fluid, and got down in about 5 hours from the east bay area. Well, i shouldn't say no problems, lost the breaks going over the grade but hey, it kept things interesting. Ive got a fix on where there is a 331 and still would like to put it in. I think im gonna swoop it up and keep it around until i decide i want to tear things up and dive in to make it happen!

  3. I have less than $400 invested in two good 331's. one came with a complete running 54 GMC wrapped around it. the other was free for hauling. I wouldn't spend a dime on rebuilding either.

Sweet! I'm getting ready to fab the motor mounts on the frame for my 331 in my '53!!! Anybody got pics of how they fixed their steering issues? Lengthen pitman arm? Knocking around the idea of reversing the box if possible...

I can 100 percent say that a BBC fits in there perfectly. It is the same length as a 53 331 and an inch narrower and 50 pounds lighter and if you modify the stock motor mounts they work great too. I am running a 454 in my 53 series 62. I like everything about it but the fuel mileage around town , I get about 8 mpg. on the interstate I get 15 mpg.

Go for it!!! I am a dyed in the wool chevy guy but very open minded. I love Oldsmobiles, Buicks Caddies and Pontiacs too. I think any thing OTHER than a BB or SBC would be the cats ***. The only exception in my opinion would be a 348/409. Dare to be different.
