A clapped out Kohler lawn mower engine would make that thing scream Seriously, a bike engine with shaft drive hookup would be the bees-knees. Reliable, killer exhaust note, economical-ish (you'd thrash it too much to care, though), and weird. Cosmo
What amused me while working at an Oldsmobile dealership in San Jose in '62 was the act of 3 mechanics standing on the bumpers (first front, then rear) while a fourth was in the front end pit chaining the a-arms and rear frame down to lower a black Starfire for the showroom! The salesmen were instructed NOT to sell this one, "It's a 'leader'..." but one of the sharks took a customer out in it, sold it, and they had to get it back in to raise it up. Killed the sale, big trouble from that one.
'54 Swallow Doretti, TR2 running gear, aluminum body, steel doors, Chromoly steel tube ladder frame. Approx. 284 built. Cheers, Kurt O.
Let's take a moment and watch some Messerschmitt racing. <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/mo7L5CYDOO0&hl=en_US&fs=1?rel=0"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/mo7L5CYDOO0&hl=en_US&fs=1?rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>
You are welcome. Catch up all you want on the BBC Iplayer. That shot with the bubble cars all stacked on shelving, that's mad! They fetch 10k for a resto project over here! I,m counting 16.....damn!
Ya see? That's what happens when you let the Ringling Brothers sponsor Nascar! Actually, Nascar might actually be interesting if they raced Messerschmidts!
Thanks for all the pics and such guys i have a lot to play around with and info to look up and such and so on my idea and some here would probably string me up for it is to find a car in the next couple years and work on it for about 5-10 putting a turbo diesel 4cyl in it... something from say a vw golf or gti I tend to like smaller cars and some of these are really nice granted most of them i'll never be able to find or afford lol i plan to eventually try to build a car that will get 65ish mpg on the highway it won't be a drag racer but when i get done it will be beautiful and reliable the next 2 years i am hoping (fingers crossed) will be spent in college learning more about cars, trying to get into a automotive program at a local community college. hopefully that will give me the knowledge to modify and customize one of these cars eventually well again thanks for the pics i got some good ones to go on and gonna break out GIMP later tonight and see what i can "photoshop up", for those who don't know GIMP is a editing software similar to photoshop but important part for me is it's free
I've always wanted a REAL Mini, not the new one! Always wanted a Citroen 2CV, also. Yeah, I like the weird small cars, too!
Just take the 50s or 60s car of your choice and toss it in the dryer on high heat for a while. And it works on the 60s cars also http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_u-IMiX6PEY
Loved the Messredchmidt races, but if you're looking for something a bit more intense... Here's a favorite movie chase scene featuring a couple of smaller cars. <object width="500" height="405"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/XVs5rVf8hB0&hl=en_US&fs=1?color1=0x5d1719&color2=0xcd311b&border=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/XVs5rVf8hB0&hl=en_US&fs=1?color1=0x5d1719&color2=0xcd311b&border=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="500" height="405"></embed></object>
The "perfect" small car, Lightburn Zeta. Built by the company that made Lightburn washing machines. The rear seat could be removed and attached to the roof to view sporting events. (Stop laughing!!!). and, if that isn't sporty enough:
Lotus Cortina, pop had an orange 64 with black stripes. I remember stealing the cushions off the couch to ride in the back of it between the roll bar.
The Cony 360 Van - these were given away as prizes in an ABC music show called Where the Action is in 1965. I'd have been scared stiff to drive one of these in SoCal back then.
You might have heard of this one......... This one aint too bad either..... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f2V7B7-gdRA&feature=related
Here is my small car of the past, except it's been my daily driver for the last 15 years. 1965 Cortina GT
