When i buy the '53-'55 Ford F100 body pieces and build my truck, what can i do? i wont have a vin number, how will i get it registered and all of that?
Buy a ***le from someone. '53 and many '54s didn't have vin numbers/vin tags. They were registered off the motor number if registered at all; back then you weren't required to register farm vehicles. But if you get an old used ***le from someone you can get a vin tag from Sacremento Ford. It goes on the drivers windshield post.
check local registration processes - you may not have to much trouble. some states are easier on hobbyists cars that say a late model rebuilt wreck.
PM me, I can tell you where to go to find your VIN and how to get a ***le in Louisiana. Its absurd to suggest there was no VIN in 55
Prolly oughta start looking for a junk F-100 with the glove box tag, the VIN stamping on top of the right frame rail adjacent to [just behind] the front crossmember and a ***le for that particular VIN. In my state, the VIN on the frame and glovebox had better match the ***le or we get no new ***le...and no license plates and no registration.
Funny you should mention this. I was wondering about this too. I've got most of a 46 chevy truck but the cab is the only part i'll be using. We're going to scratch build a frame and then cut the cab up and make a roadster out of it. I believe i've read on here before that I should register/***le the truck FIRST instead of trying to register/***le the roadster. Does this sound right or even make sense? Does it even matter? Does Joan Rivers really think we all do know she's had a few too many face lifts????? ...and what will I do about a VIN number on something like this? Butcher
well there was a glove box.. see, this guy im getting it from bought 3 f100s, '53-'55.. he used parts off of all of them and put his together.. all the left overs are in good shape and are enough to make another truck. thing is, the glove box for the cab im getting he used in his and took that VIN number.. im not sure if the frame im getting went with the cab im getting also.. otherwise i guess im fuct?
check with your DMV..Ky has a application for motor number or vehicle identification # TC-169 ..you have to tell them why it doesn't have the VIN tag on it if it ever did.this app/ that Ky uses is the same app/ we use to get VIN's for home biult cars and anything we need to get tags on (sickles)(boats)(trailers)send in the app/ and they review it sometimes come and look.if they ok it ,they send you a VIN in the mail then a state cop stops by and tells you where to put the VIN .. your state more than likely has something like this
It's amazing how strict some states are as opposed to how lenient others are. In NY, they never see your car, except when a car that was totalled out is reinspected for a new ***le. I could register it as anything I want as long as I have an old reg for it. If you don't have a reg then it depends how fussy the DMV is - claim inheritance or an old car that sat in the barn for years and has no card, and usually one notarized form and a pencil etching is good enough to get by. Your reg is just nontransferrable for the first 6 months. But especially with cars where the VIN is inside the door post or some other less con****uous location, you can swap tags or not even bother. Unless you plan to run drugs or something that gets the car searched, it's not likely to ever get picked out. Oh yeah, and no ***les here on the cars we care about. Never had ***les until 1973 so 72 and older don't need them. It's literally almost cheaper and easier to pay someone to put antique insurance and plates on an old car and generate a correct registration card (some states will take one and give you a ***le, because it's from NY) than to try to go through the h***le of not having one, especially if you're selling to go out of state. You only have to do it the 6 months - I did try to reg a '72 Ford truck years ago and every time we went to the DMV they wanted another form notarized. The truck had no tag at all. I finally ended up buying a tag and card off another truck at the junkyard, a truck that was basically a shell anyhow. Then I junked the truck I had - about the time I did that it started knocking and overheating and I said to heck with it. Every car made from around the 1950's on will have a hidden location or two where the VIN is stamped. Only the police are supposed to know where to look for them - it's an early anti-theft measure. If you can find someone who makes tags, in this case I see one's mentioned for Fords, then you can have one made and rivet it into place that matches the hidden one. Not sure what I will do with my one Chrysler if it ever gets to that point, since the tag is gone. If the guy I got it from has a registration card for it, it won't matter much. If not... I drove my '60 Pontiac everyday for three years and even though I was pulled over a few times, they never cross-checked the tag inside the door to the sticker. I think most police wouldn't know where to check for the tag - one cop stopped me because he couldn't see my stickers. They were where they belong, in fact I had a '59 Olds with a '71 sticker in it and they were in the same place then - just with a wraparound windshield they're way around on the driver's side of the car. I half expected a seat belt ticket given the car didn't have any, but after he saw the mistake he let me go.
Rocky sez the number is on the frame in the engine compartment. Thats all you need! Clean it so the State Police can read it when you ask for the Certificate of Physical Inspection. Get the rest of the paperwork I told you about and you are good to go.
I'm in Texas and want to register the 32 chevy truck I have. There is a plate riveted to the firewall on the right side.(Is this the VIN number plate). If so what do I need to do in order to tile this thing ??
