have a 54 belair and am curious whats the pros and cons of putting a 700R4 behind the 235 with adapter kit. how difficult is this conversion anyone done it? any help is appreciated
Pros... deeper first gear, overdrive fourth gear. Cons... having to change your rear end (not sure that's really a con), cost of the adaptor and drive shaft. Have I missed anything? Just make sure you hook it up to the old column shift, none of that B&M floorshift silliness.
Any of the adapter kits that work for a turbo350 or other GM trans will work for any 700R4 or 200R4. I second that you need a new rearend (open drive conversion), and the 200R4 is a better choice, it is smaller and will fit better.
I've just started looking for an adaptor kit to do the same thing. The only one I've found so far is through Langdon's Stovebolt Engine Company. It runs about $350. Who else makes these adaptors?

I was thinking a Mr. Gasket light truck kit with the crazy long stick ending in an 8ball!
the bellhousing is super different.... straight 6s in the 50s were rounded. i know this from experience.... doesnt bolt up at all.
$350 will get ya a long ways into a running 250"-6 to replace the 235" and the 250" will bolt up to that trans.
I got a 292 I'll hook you up with for next to nuthin', with a power glide, too. The 292 will bolt strait up to the 200, 700 or whatever you want.
Of course, attaching the 250/292 to the frame and clearing the radiator is a whole 'nother kettle of fish. By the time you change the mounts for one you coulda had a V8 for the same effort. I'm planning long term to T5 my '50 and run the 235 in it until it breaks. If it breaks, I'll go get a 261 -
