I've been thinking about buying this book. Is it any good? As in, does it give you good ideas and such? Cheers

I had the whole set at one time. For a young dude who did not have the chance to see any of the cars in real life they were good to have.

    Very good book!!

  5. The series is mostly pictures of customs from back in the day with a few sets of build shots for certain cars and projects, seems like that volume has construction shots of the Aztec shown on the cover.

So does it go into things like how they adapted the grille off a 1955 fretzog into a 1949 widget super V16, and how they frenched the doors on a 45 Chevy, & stuff like that? Know what I mean?

  9. I think the volume which includes roof chops is being/has been recently re-issued.

  10. I think Barris got out the old pictures and wrote from memory, it doesn't go into all the fine nuts and bolts, but the coverage of things like a 49 Merc grille shell into a '50 Ford are as good as your typical magazine article. The "Aztec" coverage is more extensive, covering several pages showing the alterations to grille, hood, headlights and taillights.

Hey Stuey, Buy the book, Ill help you with the nuts and bolts.

  12. They are not "how-to" books and George doesn't pretend they are but they are an incredible look at the work done at one of the most influencial custom shops of all time. I have read mine about 100 times each.

Andy Southard's series of books are also an excellent archive of 50's and 60's Rods and Customs.

  17. Book is GREAT!!! ... Once upon a time before there was internet and places like the hamb you had NO CHOICE but to buy all these books and magazines from back in the day,if you want to see how it was done back then.Nowdays there is no chase in finding the old ways and facts of how things were done back then.Today you dont have to do your homework and study kustoms all you do is punch in your question of what you are wondering and your answers are there for you.So yes the book is good and you starting a thread to ask if you should buy it is kind of funny to me but if you dont buy it you will be able to find out all your questions on line anyway but the choice is yours. ;)
