Hey guys, n00b here needing some tips on spraying some paint. Do I need any special prep to spray the hot rod flatz? Urethane can't be sprayed over enamel or else it will bubble right? Can I just spray it over bare metal? Do I need any special masking material so the tires and wheels don't get overspray? Just thought I would ask the best hot rod forum around!
Ok I know everyone has to learn but as you have outlayed a bit of cash for your hotrod flatz get somebody who can show you to paint your car.Painting isnt all that simple, watch & learn........
Sand to 400 minimum Id put some sealer over the whole thing after sanding then spray the flatz Garbage bags work well in a pinch for masking the wheels....
Good Captain is right, if you can find someone to 'walk you through' on painting, it would be a great idea. I started my painting with helicopters in the Navy some 20+yrs ago. There are SO many tricks and skills to painting that people just don't know about. One trick I have for you to protect wheels/tires from overspray is, take a large Hefty garbage sack (I like the ones for leaves cuz they are huge) and open it. Then cut it from the opening to half-way down the bag. Then slip it over the entire wheel with the cut you made going toward the inside of the wheel well. The cut you made is for the axle in the back. Once on, tape it in place in the back. Tada! No waste of tape or wrestling with newspaper. This is actually a fairly common trick that new painters usually don't know about. As for masking, my own rule is, take off as much as you can so you can mask as little as possible. There is a way to mask AND a way to remove it. It can really chap your *** if you put in a ton of work just to have some masking peel back some paint you just put down. So I endeavor like hell to mask as little as possible and just remove items from my cars. I once drove my '67 Camaro to a buddy's paint booth with no gl*** and sitting on a lawn chair. Talk about "bare bones"...lol You don't have to go that extreme, but if you can, the better it will be, IMO. (hahaha, I noticed after I posted that Johnny mentioned the garbage bags)
