Just how many parts will I sell from this 53 ford?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Old wolf, Jul 2, 2010.

  1. A few years ago I bought a 53 ford for$5.oo. My wife went with me when I drug it home. She said she would pay me $15.oo to leave it there. any how I sold the hood hinges and air boxes for $100 some stainless for $20 the front hubs for $100 and today both bumpers the horn ring and two pieces of trim for $120.oo. Not much left but it still isnt going to the crusher. It Rellly irritates my wife when I sell some parts from this rusty hull?

Although I never paid $5 for a whole parts car, if you wait long enough, someone will need something off of it. Did this with a 70-71 Camaro many years back - paid $300 for it which I thought was way too much. Turns out it was a hi-po car and I sold/parted out everything of fthe car for about $2600. I also bought a bunch of 40 Ford p-ups another time - 2 1/2 plus another cab for $3500 - really alot of money. I ended up selling out $5500 worth of parts, bartered some of the parts for work to be done on my projects, parlayed some of the parts into better parts so those better parts plus enough of what I already had to build one nice 40 p-up which is in progress right now. If you figure the price of a 40 p-up to put together say at $2500, I got $4500 back on my investment of $3500. It was work, but what isn't that is not worth while?

I've bought lots of parts from folks going to street rod a car - paid $200-250 for the parts and sold the stuff for over $1200.

We've all done this - for me, this is how I make this hobby affordable. Moving up to cars, once I sell a car I've put together though, here's what I do to make the wife really happy: I get back what I have invested in it, give the wife $200 or so as mad money for her to go shopping with, and give the balance to the house for a rainy day, house projects, a vacation. My wife likes that so much she keeps asking what she can do to help me sell something!!! Now I've created a monster - she tells me every day to "go to the garage" and get to work - oh boy ....

A kid who worked for me always talked about an early 70s Chevelle malibu he was "working on", a family car which had been p***ed around since new, brother to brother, cousin to cousin etc. I went to look at it and it was total junk BUT it was a factory SS car with good bumpers, dash and interior. He parted out the body for over $800.
That got him a very nice same year Grandma car 2door hardtop sitting outside a gargae without a back window for $400. The back window from the junker and a $100 in parts got him on the road in a nice bronze color Malibu with V8 auto and AC.
Being a dumb*** kid though he destroyed the car in less than 2 years. Oh well.

Exactly. Through timing, work, and knowing actual value of parts, a regular guy can keep the over-head down in this hobby. That and a big back yard the wife doesn't have to look at every day.

  6. At one time I could make a living dealing inold cars trucks. I still make a little extra cash from them. But since the economy tanked and the factories around here closed Its been slim pickins. Any how I drive truck part time so i can spend all my car money on more car junk. My wife dont care lets me and my sons have all we want. We have 300 on 3 acres plus more at the farm where i grew up. she just dont like it that I rub it in when I sell parts off this particular car. she wanted me to just leave it didnt think it was worth dragging home.:DOldWolf

I think I got $400 for the last good set of hood hinges I had for one of these.

If I had yours, I'd at least save the doors and chop out the quarter panel sections up into the roof, keep all of the pieces it would take to convert a 4 door. The conversions are getting more popular every day, and this would be a great donor.

all kinds of good parts on there. list some on ebay, make sure they know you are parting out a whole car and have a picture of what's left. I parted a 51 and 53 Chevy, as well as a 60 El Camino. I used to put in the sub***le "parting out a 1951 Chevrolet sedan" people would email me looking for parts.

I didn't throw anything away that was useable except a 51 frame that I sold the trans crossmember out of. coudn't find a taker for that one and the landlord was on my case about having it outside.

  17. Back in the mid 80's, I was paid $100 to clean out a 3 car garage in Lincoln, NE. In it was 2 '35 Ford Tudor sedan bodies, a bare frame and ***orted other iron. I sold the shell with a bare frame for $600, and gave the other body shell to a fellow in Omaha who had been T-Boned in his '35 sedan. Several of his club mates from the Mid West Street Rods came and got the shell while he was in the hospital.

  18. I once bought a '57 Plymouth for $300 and sold the three good bumper wings off it for $600 before I even brought the damn car home (cut them off with a battery sawzall) -

  19. I just sold the tie rods and related parts for $40.oo! I can use the money My trucking job has been slow only hauled 5 loads in the last two weeks and none the week before those two. At least Im not deep in debt. OldWolf

I used to get the same response when I scrounged cheap/free parts and flipped them for a profit.

Now, I spend a percentage of the proceeds on dinner/flowers for my wife... so we both benefit. :)

I do the same, buy parts and then sell what I don't need to buy the parts I do need for my car. My wife calls it self financing.

I believe that to be a Victoria with that 3 piece window. Get it if you can . Got to be some restorers who would pay for some Victoria-only pieces. I believe, perhaps falsely, that the Sunliner and Victoria, both in the Crestliner series, have shorter windshields than the Custom series. I do St@ 2b corrected.

This is the almost as much fun as building one....buying, selling, trading parts. Went to pick up a Model A frame earlier this week, paid a fair price for it, as I was loading it up the seller threw in a good banger block and a complete A steering box/column/wheel. I don't need either, but someone will.

Humm, Maybe I should part out my 38. I have threatened to do that with my black 40 pickup. On paper I could use 18k in parts from it in my 40 pickup project. At what point are parts worth more than the driver?
