What's a good source for "normal" flashlights?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Groucho, Jul 12, 2010.

  1. These LED flashlight's are just ****ing useless. They are bright as Hell if you look into them. But, they're useless for illuminating the object you're trying to view. So, I'm gonna stock up on normal flashlights and spare bulbs. Thanks

I'm so glad someone else thinks the same way! Nothing's as good as the old Mag Lights. How come manufacturers can't leave anything alone? Look at all this "ergonomic" ****. Stupid shaped hammers, etc..

+1 on the Mag light. Had one for 11 years, the switch went bad, sent it back, and they rebuilt the whole thing (even painted it! ) for nothing. I finally lost it,but it would not quit. I'm about 5 or 6 years on the second one now...no problems...plenty bright

I agree that for the most part LED flashlights ****. But my brother in law over in Hong Kong has been making me up these flash lights that are basically a handle with two AA batteries with a long flexible neck about six inches long with a high power LED - *****IN! I can see down inside all sorts of stuff you can't with even a good Maglight. I have a couple of rough spots to sort out yet, but I think I'm going to offer them for sale here pretty quick. I'll be ready to show them soon, in the mean time my buddies beating them up in shops are liking them.

Lots of the old incandescent bulb'd Maglites on eBay available used for real cheap. Grab a couple and a couple packs of replacement bulbs, should be set for life.

X2 on the Streamlite Stinger....kinda pricy at $100 HOWEVER it has a cool strobe feature that really ****s with mean drunks and a brightness select (I honestly have never used that feature, I've always it set to retinal burn mode)

Been using this flashlight in my industry for years, it's been beat up, run over used as a prybar etc and wont flippen break....best light I've ever had.

  10. +3, the only problem i had was if you leave it on for 15min or more it overheats the plastic lens. i also have the led conversion for it and it is super bright.

Not all of em. I have three fairly new ones that take regular bulbs. There was a really cool artical about Maglite on MSN.com just recently. Search it out and it'll make you want to buy them even more.

Maglite donated a truckload of their lights to the search and recovery teams at the WTC. I'll buy their stuff as long as they are in business.

Non-LED Maglites are still plenty easy to buy just about anywhere they are sold. Local Target has about 20 of them on the shelf.

Myself, Ive got one of the original rechargeable maglites... bought it in the early/mid-90s. Still on the original bulb, but I did have to replace the battery pack a couple years ago. It wouldnt hold a charge for more than 10min.. but it took 10 years to go bad. Its bright as hell, a lot brighter than my 4-Dcell maglite even.

Its black, and the bottom 3" or so are covered with reflective multi-color "peel here" stickers from license plate registration stickers. (LEO/ easy to spot your light at night, in a field, when looking for someone who just leg bailed,... or tell it apart from everyone elses light, cuz they always want to take mine it seems)

My vote is for the Stinger. Pricey=yep. Good=Hell Ya! The only thing i've ever had take a **** was the bulb because i've dropped it=several times. Tool trucks carry em'. About 8$.Never had an issue with charging/battery in 7+ years.Beat the **** out of it,and it keeps working. The light it projects is adjustable, and works great. My .02C.

Surefire if you want bright. Will melt the lense if you accidently leave them on. They dont last long and take expensive 3V batteries, but for brightness, they are the best Ive found. Dont use the 3V looking ones for the SINCGARS (or maybe they go to the MBITR radio) though as itll burn out the bulb.

I have used these at work for years. http://www.uwkinetics.com/product/6 Thay use a xenon bulb, four AA batteries, are vary light weight. Did i mention thay are vary bright, waterproof, pocket size, and impact resestant. The only problem I have had is mine keep getting lost or stollen.

Maglite, 3 "C" cell, 20 years old, still works great. Been in 17 States and 8 Countries over the years and dropped from the #2 engine patio on a DC-10. Dented the case, every thing else was good. We sent a BOX of them to the company, some of which were on the 3rd owner, they came back as good as knew.

My pal Stormin' Norman used a Maglite body for his upper radiator hose on his finely-finished Chevy II wagon...Entire engine was polished alum Vortek, with transluscent blue painted details...he matched the engine compartment to his favorite beverage, Keystone light!
    Stormin' is a detail genius.
