I ***ume you bought a Champ style with 10" ring gear. Most Champ style rearends are about the same and a lot of parts will interchange. Send some pictures so we can see what you've got.
There are a number of people making lockers/loaded gear sets, bearings......etc.

I plan to pick it up next week. Will post pics. It isn't a Champ though. Its bolted up to what I think are ford truck axle housings

  6. I'm using a C.A.E. quickchange in my 30' Chrysler project. The guy I got it from raced sprint cars for 30 years and told me it was mid-late 40's rearend. It's a floater that uses 1936-1946? Ford truck (1, 2 ton) bells and axles. Mine has finned aluminum wide 5 drums and hubs. I will be running Ford wide 5 rims all around. Has neat looking gear cover on it though! Also uses the standard Halibrand, winters, frankland gear sets.

The picture is loading. Sometimes it takes a few seconds depending on the speed of your internet connection.

CAE is a direct copy of the Halibrand with much better engineering in the pinion, case and side plate area. They also made side plates to adapt early Ford housings which is what I used. The unit you have is a very desirable QC, but never got the Hot Rod image of Halibrand.

  11. I have a CAE champ as well - I love Halibrand stuff but the CAE housing and rear cover are, to me, the best looking with the crisscrossed bracing.

be aware if its an open-tube rear CAE[later ARC] it uses a completely different method of holding the hubs on.Instead of the usual splined or tapered it used bolts threaded in from INSIDE the axle tube!!Many a six year old got their introduction to sprint cars by trying to start those bolts with small hands. The wing nut holding the wheel on is also quite a bit bigger than the other brands.

I'm told it's probably a Champ and if so has a spool not a differential. Where would I get a diff if I need one and how much

You might check with Speedway, I know at one time they had a posi unit to fit a champ type rear. The other thought is stock Ford truck stuff, I believe it is '37 - '52 bigger truck stuff. Ton or better. if I'm wrong, please somebody correct me on that. Winters would be another possibility.

  18. You see champ posi's and lockers on eBay all the time - Dan Press Industries (DPI) is one manufacturer - they make a gold track (and now platinum track) diff that works really well. I think most are 31 spline as well.
