Finally took my car for a drive yesterday. First time I have ever been in a car this old, can anybody tell me how they are suppose to shift? Meaning is it normal for the grinding when going from one gear to the next?
They don't have synchonizers in the trans. You need to double clutch. When shifting from first to second, put it in neutral, let the clutch out, put it back in, this lets the engine speed and trans speed equalize, then shift into second. Do the same for your shift from second to third, and any time you shift. Red
i bought a 52 ford and drove it home 3400 kms it was same way after 1st day i could shift it up no sweat once the rpms are high enuf if will slip into neutral easy and into 2nd but after 5000ks i still couldnt down shift it my old man got into it and down shifted nota prob hes a trucker tho... good luck keep grindin gears
The model A transmission was built to have 600 weight oil as a lubricant. Most model A owners use straight STP oil treatment. It is very close to 600w oil. If you run 80-90w or 90-140w oil you will grind every shift.
600 wieght, that must have been interesting to try to shift in the winter when it was like 10' F out.
holy crap! $185?!?!?! I saw it on amazon for 185 but another site had it for 35; could it be the same book for 150 less?
Do not use STP. It is not an oil! Use the correct 600 wt trans fluid available from you local Model A supply house.
