Anybody ever seen this exhaust cutout? My grandfather gave it to me. According to him it was an original hot rod part made for the Model A, and he used it run it on his A back in the 40s. I'll post pics later once I get some. Just wondering if anybody else has ever seen one. It's cast with Hol E Terror in the casting. I'd really like to find another some day, but after years of shows and swap meets this is still the only one I've seen. I did find one guy in his 80s at Syracuse Nationals last year who kind of remembered seeing one before. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!
Neat setup! Are there any patent numbers on it (could try a google patent search either by number or name)?
That is wild! File that one in the "Holy Grail of Parts" thread. This is going to be real interesting to see if anyone comes up with another one.
I wish there was a patent number on it, but it just says 'Patd'. It looks like the original company was the ER Drayer Manufacturing Company of Richmond, IN. I've tried finding out anything else about that company, but haven't turned up anything. Some day I want to build a period perfect A rod, and this is the inspiration of that build. This and my grandfather telling me about the one he built.
I'm guessing that I'm going to strike out again, but any information would be great! Anybody ever hear of that company? Maybe they made some other interesting parts?
Hmmm, this is getting really interesting. Thanks for the information! So, maybe they switched their corporation to Indiana from Ohio (my family is all from Ohio. I moved to Rochester, NY a few years ago.). If they went out of business in 1903, that would mean this is a really, really early performance part. I need to hit the books a bit more and do some more digging. Thanks for the help!
Hard to imagine a part like that being produced that early, is it not? Probably for a stove or off a train lol
Pics aren't working for me...? OK, cool...i'll try from another computer. sorry for the interruption.

That's awesome! Thanks! Yet again, this is why the H.A.M.B. rocks. I can't tell you how much I appreciate the help. 15 years I've had this on my shop display shelf. Thanks!
Great find on the search. Looks like even back then they filled patents with mega amounts of mumbo jumbo. Thats a very cool little piece.
The first sentence in the Patent (applied for in 1921) - "My present invention relates to exhuast cut outs for automobiles or other vehicles propelled by explosive engines and has for its object to improve the same in several particulars hereinafter noted." go faster and make more noise!!!! Refreshing to know that some things never change.
Yup, I've been checking out the patents, and he actually has a few related to this. All are modifications - cables, cable brackets, etc. Now I want to find out how many of these he actually made.
Woah! You ARE slick, Willy. Now, someone come up with another so this guy can build his A with duals.
I kind of think that just may be an asbestos gasket. There's a reason why I don't play with it. Now that I have a better idea of just where it came from, I'll be getting rid of the old pipe clamps and dispose of that gasket. Now comes the fun part. I gotta find an A. I know my grandfather's A had a rumble seat, but he can't remember what year the car was. I'm going to be visiting him in a couple of weeks, and plan on quizzing him for whatever details he can remember. Another one of those would be perfect.
Good work Willy...............That is a very cool piece, something I might p*** by at a swap meet. Not any more!
