Pondering doing some scallops on my '59. I think it would accentuate some of the cool lines on my car. Any thoughts? I know some people don't like them but flames are much more common and I like to try and be more out of the ordinary.
man, that looks like a really nice car as is. i don't know if i would do that. in my personal opinion, i think it would benefit much more from a height adjustment.
That was the best pic I had here. LOL! I've since replaced all the suspension and put a 1 1/2" lift on the rear. It's funny, I never take pics of my own car. I guess it's cause I can see it whenever I want.
I think he meant lower the height, not raise it! Scallops look good on late 50s/early 60s cars. I have a freind with a '59 starchief with some scallops, but I don't have any pics of his car.
Oh yes it did, I couldn't make it out the driveway on an angle without dragging the rear bumper. And I have a flat driveway with a roll-off curb at the end! Her ass really hangs out the back.
at THAT height? I lowered my 59 Chevy 3+ inches and I rarely drag the pipes and never the bumper... curbs, speed bumps, etc. Maybe it's the angle of your photo. Back on topic... shave the trim (or some of it) and add long scallops.
here's my friend's Star Chief. The scallops are only on the roof, and you can't see them in this photo
That looks nice. I can kind of see it running the rain gutter. I was thinking maybe something running the back of the front wheel well and the rocker since they're fairly pronounced. Might have to start some sketches.
Oh, and mine doesn't sit much higher than that. Really close except the back rides a bit higher. When the trunk is loaded she sits damn level. I run a lot of long distance trips with luggage, coolers, etc. and wanted the clearance.
I don't know man. I say "SLAMIT" and roll that thing the way it is. I dont buy you draggin ass with it higher than in that pic but I guess i just don't care when it comes to getting lower. Unless you are going to go all "Watson Style" on that car I say leave it. Eric
You could add adjustable air shocks in the back for entering/exiting driveways and you don't have that weird ass-in-th-air look. Back to the main topic... I'd say shave the handles, but leave the rest of the trim, then build crazy Watson-style scallops following the curves of the trim and fins
yep something crazy like this would work. I think stock looking or wild. no subtle stuff on a car like that.
Looks like a super solid car! If it were a two-door sedan, or a Bonneville or Catalina two-door hardtop or ragtop, I'd be all for the custom paint. But since its a nice clean original four-door sedan in that great color, it seems like it'd look better with a set of the optional '59 Pontiac three-bar spinner wheelcovers and correct-width whitewalls. Scallops will make it look like you're just trying to customize Grandad's car. Maybe you could invest the paint budget in a tri-power setup. Sorta makes me nostalgic for my old Star Chief Vista (shown with the '59 spinner caps). Love those Knudsen-era Pontiacs!
I already have the tri power. LOL! Also have a limited slip differential in her. Just looking for some input and thoughts. No disrespect to anyone but it's my car and I'll still do what I want to it.
GM cars from 58-64 deserve scallops unless they're a total hot rod. Those large expanses of sheet metal are an artist's easel. Get busy laying them out. Dig out some old magazines for ideas. dj
Putzing on craigslist last night and found this. He uglied it up with scallops. I think there's MUCH better options than this. I'll have to keep looking and perhaps do some sketches.
Seeing your car and you asking about scallops made me think of this one from Wichita. (Pics are from carnut.com)
Nope, I love this car. Have had it for 11 years now and have been slowly modifying things. I like to be unique, do what I like to do to the car. Make it my own and not just another '59 poncho the same as the next guy's.
