Never was a fan of the 302 Fords. I like the looks of a SBC a lot more. But I was given a 80's Grand Maquis with a 302 and a OD automatic in it. I should use it cause it's free but I'm putting it in a Model A and the A will more than likely be sold after I play with it a little. It's no big deal to me cause it's gonna have a hood but I don't know if the Ford motor will scare some people away. I know there is a small following that would prefer the Ford but there is a lot that might not. What do you guys think??? Clark (SoWhat)
Sell the Grand Marquis to someone who wants a driver and use the loot to buy a small block Chevy if that's what ya really want, and if you're building it with easy resale in mind. I think a small block Ford looks cool in a Model A, personally, but the one in your Marquis will need to be stripped of all it's smog era junk and equipped with dress-up and performance parts for earlier 289/302 engines...and that'd cost more than just buying a basic SBC to start with.
You are doing pretty good with the free stuff lately!! I say that if you are gonna sell the A when you are done with it,use the 302.Makes the profit a little higher.
If I had resale in mind, I wouldn't even consider the Ford. If I wanted to keep it forever, I wouldn't consider a Ford, unless it were a flathead - a really nice flathead...
clark phillip from richmond runs one of those in his model a coupe.. it looks good, but would look better under a hood.. I assume this is for the sport coupe you snaked out from under me?
I have a 302 in my 34 and I love it. Cheaper than 350 and still reliable. If you're selling just use it. Its all there no need to hunt and buy all kinds of stuff you have together already.
I'm putting one in my T pickup.....then again, I don't know anything about "resale value" Anyone care to explain that one to me? I've never heard of that concept before.
if you're building a FORD,run a FORD !!!!...no bigger turnoff than a bowtie in a FORD... RUN WITH WHAT YOU ARE BUILDING
I never really cared much for 302's-they were made a little too late to be traditional. SBC's are great, but as far as traditional OHV's go I prefer Olds, Buick or Caddy V8s. -Dean
A small block Ford powered the 2003 AND 2004 Nascar champion. You really don't think one is capable of hustling a Model A down the road in a hurry???
My vote is to run the 302. And you can even use the excuses most of the guys use when they swap in the sbc's. "It's cheaper" and "It's what I had so I used it"!
[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] no [/ QUOTE ] I second that motion- [/ QUOTE ] Third...even a small block chevy is better than that... tok
You mean you can actually run something other than a SBC?? When did this happen?? Everyone else has a SBC- you better just toss the 302 in the dumpster becuz you sure wouldn't want to run anything other than a SBC!! The very idea of having a project without a SBC is just mind-boggling!! Actually having an engine other than a SBC might be dangerous- it would imply that you're capable of thinking on your own!! SBC- thats the only way to go!! Be original like everyone else- run a SBC!! SBC's- Boyd wouldn't think of running anything else, so why should you?????
Hell yeah you should run it! Especially if it were free. Look, Rodder's Journal ran an article on how to dress up a SBF and somewhere in the HAMB tech section is a really kickassed article on hopping up a SBF on the cheap. Never been a chev fan. No offense, just like things a bit on the other side. As for resale to hell with that! Who is to say what someone will shell out for a vehicle if it has whatever powering it. If you build it RIGHT then it will turn you a penny. As for tradition, dress the SBF with finned valve covers and a trick air cleaner. Attach unique valve cover decals on it. Make it look like something different. Because it is. And THAT is what Hot Rodding is all about. Being unique and getting your ass down the road in a hurrrrrrryyyyy...
i seen that article- and it didnt sway me a bit. I ran a 302 in my mustang for a decade... they RULE but as a hot rod moter they're not trad and they give me LIMP DICK and im partial to ford... dont do it man you'll be the other guy on the ENZITE commercial... haha
lynn paxton is running one in the 32 hes building and ive got a fresh one here to put in something i think for resale alot of people dont care whats in it as long as it runs and it looks liek an old car the people with the strongest opinion one motor to another seem like they would be building their own cars? just my 2 cents zach
