I am building a 29 sedan and was curious if someone that has built one could tell me a good one to use. Im using older 5 x 5 1/2 wire wheels and a C4 trans behind a 52 merc flathead. Im going to have the body channeld 3 or 4 over the frame. I was wondering about what length too look for to run no fenders and wheels not too far outside the body. Thank you

You might look at an 8" Ford from an early Mustang. We have one under Flower's truck and it looks pretty good.

I used a 44 out of a international scout 5 on 5.5 pattern big brakes flanged axles great gear ratio options parts are fairly inexpensive and the width is perfect for an A

Why don't you get the rear wheels and mounted tires you're going to use and set them beside the body where you want them and measure through the center hole to back of one rim to back of other rim and get an exact measurement of rearend you need.........

I think the core question some of you are missing is that he's looking for a rear axle recommendation including the original application so he knows where to get one from. Just saying I have a 9 inch isn't going to be much help without knowing what it came out of. Differentials like the 9 inch Ford came in MANY widths and in many ch***is from narrow models like Mustangs to really wide models like Econolines.

I'd like to know this information to if I ever build an A.

    I used a rear from a S10 Blazer under my '29 sedan, 3:43 w/locker, new
drums and emergency brake cables for $109.00 at local U-Pull-it.

If you want to use the 5 on 5.5 wheel pattern rims without some type of addaptors ... your choice of rear ends is almost limited to a 57 to 72 F-100 9 inch Ford rear. ... or like the already mentioned 66 to mid 70's Ford Bronco rear end. Both are excellent choices.

The 57 to 72 F-100 rear end is 60 inches wide. Wheel mounting flange to wheel mounting flange. The Bronco is 58 inches wide ( measured the same way.

The 9 inch Ford has one of the widest ranges of gear ratios ... so you can gear the Model A to get the best out of the flathead and C-4.

A Maverick rear end is a good rear end but I believe it is too short ( width wise ) for a Model A that is channeled. Plus it is a 8 inch and has the incorrect wheel bolt pattern. The Maverick is 56 inches wide.

See how wide the wheels sit on this channeled Model A ???
You should measure the width of your Model A at the body beltline where the wheels will be and see HOW wide it is. Then add at least 2 inches per side. :D

Most rims have a back spacing. That narrows how wide the wheels sit. If you are determined to use your rims ... measure them ... subtract that amount from the overall width ( body belt line at the rimes lenght plus 2 inches per side ). That will give you a better idea of hat you need :D

That is a great source, but be careful. Some Scout 80's had a Dana 27. Not something you want, even in the Scout.

Also, for those of you making some serious power, some early Dana 44's have two-piece axles, where the flange is a separate piece from the shaft.

I have heard tale told of those breaking, but have no experience of that happening, even off road. Might just be an old rumor, but best put it out there.
