FLATHEAD guru's I need advise

    Hi guys, this is a pic from my brother in laws truck, can it be fixed with the motor in,or does it need to be pulled. Looks like the valve seat just came loose. thank[​IMG]s.

    No guru here, but that's a job that needs to be done on a valve seat machine and that means motor out. I can't think of any way to repair that in situ that wouldn't be a hack job.

    I agree, but some of these guys are magicians with this stuff.

    I agree take it out and do it right , a patch is just what it says it is,a patch and could cause you plenty of heartache down the road.
     
  6. i'm not usually a "has to be done right" guy, but some things you just can't cheat. since you already have at least one head off, and you would have to pull the manifold to get the valves out anyway, pull the engine. look at it as a positive, you can throw some new bearings and rings in it while your at it.

    Took it out,I couldn't patch it with a clear conscience.

    Look closely...a loose original seat is somewhat rare, and most common cause is a crack down into cylinder letting the socket expand. If block is OK, it could probably be fixed by an original replacement oversize seat fitted by chilling in dry ice...maybe...but you'd still want to grind seat angles and valve to make sure all was right. Pulling engine is overall much more reasonable.
