Don't ya hate that when you KNOW you're gonna ask- A stupid question? ++++++++++++ So what's the deal w/running "spider caps"? I mean, how EXACTLY do you mount them...? I see the "screw mounting holes" (?) But are you just s'posed to drill in your wheels? Self-tapping screws? Or is there a better way...? Also, who else besides MOON sells 'em (CHEAPER, I mean).... Vaphead...? I'm looking in your direction...
there are no stupid questions - only stupid answers!! - I don't know it either but I'm interested to get them cheaper too
they come with a mounting plate that goes between the lug nuts and the wheel, but it is typical to trash the mount plates. personally i would drill and tap my wheels for some machine screws. the price has come down, i think moon and richards stuff both have em for $225 now. that seems quite reasonable to me considering you don't have to hunt/beg/wait for them like the gennies.
I am not sure, But I beleive I read somewhere that the repo caps moon now sells are plastic-if that is true the add is very misleading. Moon did the same thing to me with their retro steering column mount half sweep tach--IT IS A PLASTIC CASE- even though they advertise it as "just like the original 60s tachs". Just make sure you know what you are getting before you pay the big bucks..Dale
I coundn't find any 5.5" spiders - so, here's what I did: Radar bullet lug nuts and bullet cone. My machine guy made the steel adapters to fit the 46' Ford wheels.
THEY'RE PLASTIC...???? ****, I was gonna GET one of those "half-sweep tach's" That's SO HOMO***UAL! Has anyone BOUGHT any of these caps...? Ray? Sounds like you know the score...? Fill me in!
Here"s a little history for ya on the spiders. They were manufactured by Californa Custom Accessories (later known as Cal Custom) West 65th street, Los Angeles California. Open wheel spiders came in only two bolt patterns that I know of... 4.5" and 4.75". There were also two accessories that could be added two the wheel to set off the spider center. One was called the "Beauty Ring" which snapped over The nubs on the wheel center. The other was called thE "Glamour Ring" which snapped on the outer edge of the wheel. And also available at the same time was the Kandy Apple Lacquer spray bomb. This came in "Kustom Glamour Colors." It was used to add color or fog around the spider. These were really big bucks when they first came out around 1960. $19.95 for a set of 4. Add another 5 bucks And you got the rings!!!!!!! Check out a Copy of Car Craft august 1961 for more info. I also have a set of the new Mooneyes repops (spiders) . And no they are not made of plastic. They are as close to the "real deals" as you can get. --------------------------------------------------------- "OPOSSUM BENDERS" Central Missouri Chapter
The gennie cal-custom spiders have a stamped steel mounting plate that screws are supposed to thread into but you have something like 1/1000000000 th of an inch for the screw to bite into. I drilled and tapped my wheels. kind of a pain in the *** however you look at it those screws sit in a cramped little corner between the lug bullet and the center bullet and starting five little screws each time you mount a wheel kind of ****s- but they do look cool. The radir wheel center caqp looks like a good solution.
Visor- (or anyone else) Do you have any idea how those "Beauty Rings" mount? Does anything have to be done to the wheels? (to get them to mount) I've seen 'em before, but I couldn't figure 'em out! And those "Glamour Ring's" just SNAP on, right?
The Glamour Ring is the inside ring and only mount on wheels with the nubs around the center. They just snap on.
Someone here got a set from Moon, maybe 2 years ago.And I seem to remember that they were Zinc die cast, not plastic.Moon had a whole batch that were ****ed up,and they were all going back.Somehow he got one set.
Hey greaseball, Yeah both rings snap on. And as greezy 51 added, You have to have the wheels with the nubs on the inner part of the wheel. 1955 and up chevy. 1949 and up merc and ford. Hey Greezy, I hate to correct ya bro, but the inside small ring is called the "Beauty Ring". Look on that original box I gave ya. -------------------------------------------------------- "OPOSSUM BENDERS" Central Missouri Chapter
That was Moriarity. He bought them knowing they were ****ed up and spent some time making them work. I still dont see $200+ worth of cool in them?
[ QUOTE ] I still dont see $200+ worth of cool in them? [/ QUOTE ] Where is you fashion sense? If I gotta pay for the right type and size wheel, pay to paint them, and then spring for over $200 worth of cheap repop spiders;I might as well get some Radirs or Astros.Or just get a can of Rustoleum and say **** It !
check with wirthscustomauto.com The online catalog doesnt list them, but Mike Wirth told me they have doubled the product line. They have parts from the same source as Mooneyes but much better prices.
I forgive ya man. At least you know whats cool. Where is the fashion sense and the cool? Curious minds want to know. Cheep repops? What do you think cal custom was building? There products were as cheep as they came. No difference. All the old parts had cool untill they are repoped. That goes for your cheep *** radars and astros also. All repop ****s.
considering the high tooling costs, the low demand and production, etc. and that they are in fact steel, close to the originals, that damn is cheap compared to the time you can put into finding a perfect NOS set. probably a better investment for moon tha whoever decided that scavanger pipes are due for a comeback.
You can make your own. Go to Home Depot, buy 4 fence post tops (they come in different sizes and lengths). Next, chrome lugs are a must. The Radir bullets are really cool. Apply some silicone (dont get too stupid here) to allow them to stick. If the trim rings are a must, stainless stove rings can be siliconed to the rims. There you have it, $20 spider caps. Saw a set at Kalamazoo and they had me fooled!!
[ QUOTE ] That goes for your cheep *** radars and astros also. [/ QUOTE ] Funny you should say that, because everytime my Dad and I discuss mags, he always tells me how the Cragar S/S was the wheel to have and the Mickey Thompson (Radir) mag was the cheap-o with the pinned center. Now it's just the opposite, price-wise!
Well lets see. I held a set of repops and the quality ****ed! They were no where near the quality of the originals. At that time moon was selling them a little cheaper because they had problems with them and was getting rid of them. I heard they redid them, but havent seen any evidence of that. By the way original were available with 2 bar, 3 bar, and 3 bar spinners with holes. The cost of an original set in 1963 was $11.42. Personally I would expect to pay more for an original set then repops.
