tommorow ill be spending afew good hours to get in the door at the good old california DMV. once im in the door, what should i have with me? i have the origional plates, tag pics and info, and bill of sales. i just want to get the ball rolling and get as far as i can in one day. no the truck cant go with (radiator) so what do I bring with to the dmv to start the registration on the 69? p.s. anyone put me in contact with the guy who gives info on california back taxes. saw it on his sig. dont know his name. ,thanks.
Was it previously registered in California? Do you have a title? When was the last time it was registered? Is it currently registered as "non-op"?
The last time I've had to go in person, I've had a good experience because I made an appointment online first. I showed up with all my stuff to swap license plates for YOM plates. I was in and out in 15 minutes tops....really
If it's anything like the Jacksonville NC DMV, pack a lunch, and a dinner, and a jar to piss in because they don't even have a bathroom.
You probably need an official weigh station weight slip since it is a PU/truck. I had to get one to first register my '29 closed cab in CA almost 20 years ago
box of chocolates, a good attitude and all your paper work filled out neatly and clearly. That failing, be polite and ask for help. i have talked cars through with less. oh, and have your story well rehearsed if you need to have one. back taxes only exist if the car is in the system, they will tell you all about it when you get there. remember: BE POLITE, and ask questions, strangely enough...they are known to help.
I second this. I bought AAA just to register my cars. Saved me a bunch of time and they were alot nicer than the DMV.
If the car is over 25 years old, and their are no tickets you can fill out a non op on it. they have the form already filled out and you will have to argue about it but it is legal. you need to tell them you are a collector and it is part of your collection. you will state it has NOT been on any public road at any time during the time you are requesting the non op for, you moved it on a trailer. if it is not on the computer you will need a weight slip so i suggest you get that first, because without it they cannot calculate the weight fees.
i use AAA, and if i know its going to be a pain i use California Auto Regristration Service out in temecula, nancy is great..
You need the pink to get the black plates on the vehicle, otherwise you will have to jump they the YOM hoop. Also you need 2 vin # on the vehicle for them to verify it.
one on the frame? and it has been in the system. at most 20 years since registration though (last tag is 71) so theres no need for the black plates (theyre crappy anywho) and no we dont have the pink. just a hand shake and hat tip is our form of ownership. no its not non op. just kinda fell off the grid.
question: how do they expect me to get it weighed if i cant get it on the road? will they do a temp license?
i think you can get a 30 day permit if you pay the fees. if its out of the system, and it probably is, you will need a vin verification from the CHP.

You will eventually have to trailer it to get weighed. They will start your registration for you w/o the weight certificate, but eventually it will need to be weighed to complete to process. Ask about a "one trip permit". These are available in cases where you are in the process of building a truck (like putting a body on a cab and chassis) and need to move the incomplete vehicle to have work done. Good luck with the process.
Yes 2 vins one on the frame and one on the door frame, CHP will have to verify it if you have 1 vin but if you have 2 vins they can verify it @ the DMV. It took me 6 months to get my pink fro my 54 f100.
+1 Cars with original Black CA Plates are WAAAYY cool!!! Your "crappy" black plates can be restored. Do you have any paper work (any old CA registration) tying the VIN from your truck to the black plates? This will prove your truck came with those plates. This will avoid YOM fees. Do not let DMV take those black plates. They will be gone for good. If you don't want to use the black plates (I don't understand why), tell the DMV you lost them and sell them to a HAMB'r.
Just go to a registration place its cheep and theyll do it all, and they do it everyday so they know the person behind the desk. I know someone good, she gets my stuff registered on the days the dmv clerk is haveing a good day.
A lot of patience. And perhaps landing the right person to help you. Been along time being at Cal DMV.
