Your telling me I have too much time on my hands?!? Come on dude, we build hot rods! Its the biggest waste of time ever! do hot rods cure diseases? do they solve delicate Arab-Israeli relations? No. Lets all have fun!

sorry no pix . that was in the '70s . ran fender well also . what ever was around ! .. 180's are more for dirt cars , you lose the firewall & have to make firewall & floorboards to cover them up . they normally come out behind the dist & over the bell housing & trans ................... steve

We had them on a 427 tunnel port Ford in a boat back in the late 60's. At 7000rpm it sounded like 300 inches at 10,000 rpm. I believe they were built by Ermies for the GT40 program.

That's the F.I. system you're running? I'll bet those throttle bodies will just LOVE sucking in all that nice hot air from the headers. Should make huge power.

"Just because we can, doesn't mean we should" are words not nearly enough people take to heart.

Back in '70 ,i helped a friend put a set of 180 degree hedders on his Big Block Mustang ,,all under the motor ,,we had to raise the front 'bout 7 or 8 inches so the darn things wouldn't drag on the hi way ,,we got the hedders already made up from the Old Gapp & Roush drag team ,,Later ,,in NASCAR ,,Roush ran those 180's on his Ford Race Cars ,,after winnig a bunch of races ,,everybody was tryin' em ,,BUT ,,just like everything else ,,they went out of style in favor of the Step Hedders with the Merge Collectors ,,which made a bunch more horsepower that those odd ball sounding 180's ,,

oh man you're right! Never thought of that!

Sorry, I'm 20. I'm not so jaded. I want to experiment. Im a "learn the hard way" kind of guy.

  10. I don't even want to think of the primary lengths on some of those tubes! As for equal length, to take advantage of the equal firing sequence - not so much.

My old man didn't give me too much useful advise, but one of the rare gems was "Learn from mistakes. Other people's."

Wouldn't those throttle bodies look better on a tunnel ram somehow?? I mean, while you're being crazy.

Looks like a serious waste of time and tubing. I don't get it at all.

Hokey Ass Message Board: Spreading the gospel of grumpy old men world wide!

I'll probably just swap in a set of block huggers, a holley and a th-350. I mean why try right? its just so much easier. then I can sit on my fat ass and watch cartoons and spend my time staying out of adversity. why would you wanna try something if it may not work? its just a a serious waste of time and tubing.

    what a double standard.

  16. Ease up there Junior. Some of these guys are honestly trying to help.
Just step back a few feet and think about everything else that needs to be on that engine, and where are you going to put it. I'm looking forward to seeing how this turns out.

Ok, most of us are younger than you think. But that intake is no where near traditional. Maybe it belongs on another site then, if it ever runs.

  19. Wow, quite a bit of negativity. I think a lot of people don't get the whole firing sequence thing. As for me, I like different. I hope you make that whole thing work. :D

so, if 180's are cool, 360 degree headers are TWICE as cool, right?! mine on my 1930 sedan thingy.

I've read every post on this thread because 180 degree headers interest me...
I honestly don't see many helpful posts... Pretty much just Norcal Steve...

The rest were just smartassed one-liners... How is "What a waste of time and tubing" helpful...

180 degree headers are by nature a mess... Personally, I think they belong on mid-engined cars but I'll be interested to see how this turns out too.

I dont think he said anything about his homebuilt EFI untill somebody else made a remark about the 2BBl on that engine.

As for the heat, maybe he is underestimating that problem

Maybe I am too, but I think with some heatshields, some insulation, and maybe some exhaust wrap it could be OK.

At least we wont be frying our starters like you do with a lot of header systems
So that is kinda practical, right? :D

Yesterday it was about 107 in the shade, monsoon is starting so its humid.
I have no cooling in my shop, and the metal was hot even before I started welding on it.
If the heat inside my car ( I have one with 180 headers too ), gets higher that my tolerance level can handle I could be in trouble.

    We'll see...:D

As for the sound, I love it.

    No not this time.

    Its too hot outside.... :D :D :D

( I got these dirttrack headers off Ebay, really cheap.

So I cut and shut them to work in my car.

And then I cut and shut the car to get 9" more engine setback. :)

If you go over to the Dogfight Forum you can see a Thread on it.

that is awesome! are you going to run four pipes all the way back? going to sound great!

I have an Idea for the alt mount, and thats my only accessory
I plan on ducting the intakes away from the header
4 of the pipes are 4 inches shorter than the other 4. It might be possible to chop off the shorter ones and build them longer, I'll see tonight.

I was thinking about running them under the car,but I ultimately want this thing pretty low, and tri-fives dont have much room for exhaust under the car(im still using the bellhousing mounts). im going to run them out behind the tires into a lakes pipe.

i was running this induction before, but the plenum design and injector angle was unsatisfactory, so I'll be working on that while I'll drive it with the 2bl.
the previous 283 scored up the cylinder walls and started smoking, so I found another one and rebuilt it(this time with brand new rings!)

sorry guys I'm acting way too up tight, too much caffeine! I'm trying to finish this, building a house for my parents, hunt for a job, and get ready for school. I respect a lot of people on this forum, I'm just trying to learn.

It seems to me that I tried to figure a set for a BBC in a bracket car with struts up front. I only had to cross over 2 tubes to get what I wanted. I didn't bother because drag racers are damn near like snowmobiles with regard to RPM. 180 headers bump the torque curve in the low and mid (already stated) which really helps coming out of corners, hence their popularity in sports cars and mid-engine combinations. No corners on drag strips, and the fact that our car only used like 2000RPM rise in a run, well fuck it. Not worth the effort. As fun as that looks (admit it kids, it looks like fun) you may run into some issues but if you're up to the challenge, go for it.

Oh yeah, 180deg remark "...not too hot..." made me spit a bit of iced tea on the desk. Fuckin funny.

Thanks MetalShapes! I hope we can meet some time in the near future. Shawn has told me a lot about your projects. I'd love to see your work in person!
