i picked up this truck a couple of weeks back, it sounded good when i got it, drove it home about 45 miles, about 50-55 mph. came home dropped the oil and put some vr1 in there as i did some searching here and said that was the closest oil for old tappet engines. then i drove it around 15 miles to work and it started knocking. im thinking motor is gone which i was gonna change into a 235 either way but is there maybe something simple i can do to the motor to save it? its got a 10bolt rear end and a 4sp so i dont think i over revved it enough to blow it, either way any input? http://s123.photobucket.com/albums/o295/natzpop/?action=view¤t=VIDEO0001.mp4
thats like being kinda pregnant. if the rods are knocking, hold onto your lugnuts baby. it's time for an overhaul.
My hearing is poor and your audio is distorted. I can plainly hear a valve tap very loud. But I tried to make out the other noises but can't. At least pull the valve cover to find out why one rocker is clacking so loudly. Maybe bent a pushrod or something like that. Maybe someone can hear the bottom end better...but it's strange to have a valve clack happen at the same time as a rod....
i cracked the cover open and it sounds like its coming from around valve 4, cant make out if its the intake or exhaust. damn it, havent even found a replacement motor, haha i suck
I definitely only hear valve/lifter noise. When you jacked the carb I did not hear a rod singing like I should have for a rod bearing. Think you're safe from an explosion but like previously posted pull the cover and see which rocker is loose. Sure you got the right oil filter? Oil pressure decent?
Put some STP in it. I just picked up one with low oil pressure. I put some STP in it. No change. It is done. Luckily, I don't have any rattles, this week.....................
i did some investigating, didnt want to take the valve cover off because im horrible at putting things back together, its a valve rocker thing, its loose *slaps head now to search for the right clearances to adjust them tomorrow....
I've lived my life believing that you don't have to know what it's called unless you're ordering one over the phone.
Valve "4" or cylinder 4? is that counting from front to back? back to front? Valve "#4" from the front is the exhaust valve on the #2 cylinder. Valve "#4" from the back is the exhaust valve for cylinder #5. There is a good chance you don't need a replacement motor. And sucking isn't to be taken lightly...
it would be the intake valve on cylinder 5 from front to back, lol give me a break, if this was my 12.7L series 60 detroit in my rig i would of already figured it out. haha
If it is just one of the rocker arm is you need to figure out why, it is one of three things that I can think of. One bent push rod, bad push rod, or the locking nut that is the adjustment needs to be replaced. If have seen all three of these happen before.
Or a wiped lobe onna cam.... That said, seems like you gotta good attitude even when you take a bit of ribbin....now dive in and getter done (It really cant be all that different than a "rig" basic principle is the same....)
Someone said it's not a 216? anyways, specs for a early 50's 235 is 6 thou hot intakes, 16 thou hot exhaust.
lol, i'll recount them tomorrow and see which one it is, i was at the barber shop all day drinking funny water and kept reading here and running out to check and running in and out. it is a 216, so im guessing specs are different? and yea i know what things do but cant always remember the names, or i call them funny crap hehe.
If you're afraid of taking the valve cover off why does it matter if the engine is blown or not, it's not like you're going to repair it anyhow.
And you sir are correct. I was waiting to get crap for it not being a 216 head but I got lazy on the picture search. Still, 10,000 points for those who noticed.
