My master cylinder (51 caddy) sprung a leak and I'm trying to avoid having to spend $120 on a new one. I was hoping to hone it and buy a $20 rebuild kit. But after looking at it I'm not sure if the piting is too deep. You might not be able to tell from the flicks but what'd you think?

    thanks,

BTW - if I have to replace it, is it a good idea to get a 'better' MC in order to stop? Dual res mc? I'm not interested in doing a disk conversion or anything like that.

Too much pitting. White Post & others resleeve them but it's costly.

def. too pitted. just try and find another one thats in better shape and do a rebuild. also, you can have them honed and sleeved too. if you really cant find one and you are hard up for cash, you might be able to adapt another master that has the same bore size.

Well, hell. I was hoping to take some money from today's paycheck and put it toward an air compressor or back gl***. Looks like the MC is going to have to be replaced first. Thanks for the replies.

I don't know anything about them but Coopers in Burbank shows a resleeved master cylinder with a new kit for 125.00 exchange. http://www.coopersvintage.com/pdf/1951.pdf

They have a walk in store so that should be a plus.

yea, I talked to Coop yesterday. He has the rebuild kits in stock but all his MCs are out being resleeved and won't be in for a couple weeks. There's Kanter in Jersey as an option.

I'm thinking of just finding a place here in Santa Ana to have it resleeved. Anyone got a shop like that they can suggest?

Just a thought, can you mock it up and see where the pitting and the seals run, maybe the piston and seals can run further down the cyl. and miss the pitting. best of luck.

I called and talked to Joe, great guy. Best price so far. Only problem is that he has a 6 week lead time. I broke down and spent the cash on a new one from Kanter. The cost to have it resleeved was about the same or a little more to getting a new one.

Make sure you flush the one from Kanter before you use it, they are known to sometimes not be real clean inside.
Have known folks who have had that problem.
