i was told this rearend is out of a v8 pontiac with posi and disks, but i need to get brakes for it. so im trying to find out what car it came out of to get my parts. casting # is GM N 22522676. also can anyone post a link to a website that you can look these up on? i think that would help everyone.
Photos, measurements, leaf springs, coil springs, provisions (bolt holes on the side of the casting) for a bar to run up to the crossmember under/beside the back of the trans?
Look on the left axle tube on top and get the number stamped into the tube. That will let you look up what you have. ***embly plant, date, ratio and vehicle as it came from the factory.
unfortunately i dont have a camera here and its to sunny out to take a pic wwith my phone. there are mounting holes on the left side on the front f the housing that run vertical. it looks like it had some sort of trailing arms or leaf springs on it. end of axle housing to the other end of axle housing is 56 1/4"
there are no numbers stamped on the tube. did gm use the same brakes set up on all gm disk brake rearends?
It sounds like a mid 80's Camaro/Firebird rear end. After checking about 20 web pages, the code should be stamped on the front side of the p***enger side axle tube if it is there. I just went out and looked at the one I have that is supposed to be 79 Trans Am and it doesn't have any numbers stamped in the axle tubes. Update: I went back out and took the cup brush on the grinder out to it and cleaned the front side of the p***enger side axle and the number is there. you will probably have to do some serious cleaning on that side but don't use a grinder as the numbers are pretty faint as it is. Does your rear end still have the Tag under one of the cover bolts? The code should be on that if it is there.
If the read end has been sand blasted they may be gone otherwise the numbers are there. You may need to sand the tube to see them. All housing came from the factory with numbers stamped into the tube. GM used different setups depending on body style. When you say you need brakes what do you actually need? Rotors, calipers, pads??
i just need rotors and pads. there was a tag on it at one point in its life but it is missing now. it might be in my garage but ill check it out. mr48chev: thanks for going out and checking. i dont have an extension cord long enough to reach it so i might be doing it by hand with some 80grit paper.
ok, so i went out and sanded it down and found some numbers. this is what it looks like but my hand sanding wiped out some parts of numbers. here is what i got. 2H Y C064 2 i think im just internet retarded becasue i cant find any place to look up numbers.
What I find is you have a 1986 Camaro rear axle with 3.23 ratio posi built at the Buffalo ***embly plant June 4th 1986 on the 2nd shift. Pontiac didn't use the code 2HY but Chevy did. check out this site for more info and good luck. http://www.iroczone.com/2009/10/1986-camaro-rear-axle-gear-specifications-and-availability/ If the link doesn't work check the last word and make sure there isn't a space in it. If so delete the space and the link should work.
